Program Overview

The USC Tina and Rick Caruso Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery invites applications for a seasonal Teacher of the Deaf (TOD) or Speech-language Pathologist to support the Summer Literacy Intervention Program “Come Read With Me atUSC.” The program focuses on developing early literacy skills for Spanish-speaking children with severe to profound hearing loss, ages 5;0 to 10;0, who may use hearing aids, BAHA devices, or cochlear implants.

The selected resource employee will lead small‑group instruction, deliver 12 instructional sessions of 3hours each over a three‑week period, and monitor progress toward early‑literacy goals.

• Attend a mandatory two‑day training class and a team planning day before the program starts.
• Analyze literacy assessment reports to establish baseline for each child.
• Plan and teach lessons targeting the program’s four literacy domains.
• Lead and guide small‑group instruction for Deaf/Hard of Hearing children, delivering 12 sessions.
• Provide constructive, corrective feedback and age‑appropriate behavior‑management strategies.
• Re‑teach to reinforce concepts and meet individual learning needs.
• Differentiate instruction based on each child’s level.
• Ensure safety and well‑being of children during indoor and outdoor activities, following USC Office of Youth Protective Services guidelines.
• Collaborate with USC faculty, faculty supervisors, graduate students, and parents for daily guidance, mentorship, and program evaluation.

• Knowledge of speech, language, and literacy development in bilingual or multilingual Deaf/Hard of Hearing children.
• Experience working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing using hearing technology.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Critical thinking, problem‑solving, and creativity.
• Adaptability and ability to manage multiple tasks.
• Strong lesson‑planning and organizational skills.
• Reliability and professionalism in a university and clinical outreach setting.

• Deaf/Hard of Hearing teaching credential, or certificate of clinical competence in speech‑language pathology, or listening‑and‑spoken‑language specialist certification in AVT or AVEd.
• Experience in a complex medical or academic development setting.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Cooperative and team‑oriented attitude.
• Strong facilitation skills in classroom settings.
• High level of integrity and honesty with confidential information.

The position is on‑site at the USC University Park Campus Child Development Center. Hourly rate: $41.00/hour with a $100 stipend for classroom materials. Work hours and on‑site days may vary with business needs. Employment contingent upon background check and Live Scan fingerprint clearance.
