Job Description and Position Requirements

The College of Education Equity is seeking to hire for its Upward Bound program.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver 20-30 hours of math content for diverse high school students from across Pennsylvania during the week of July 6-10 in-person at the Altoona campus.
  • Attend 10 hours of professional learning and orientation programming beginning in May through the start of the Summer Academy in June.
  • Meet one‑on‑one with the Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator prior to the start of the Summer Academy.
  • Create a course scope and sequence to be delivered to the Coordinator by June 1, 2025.
  • Participate in weekly instructional staff meetings during the Summer Academy.
  • Possibly serve as a “second authorized adult” in another course.
  • Participate in the scheduled “Meet Your Instructor” panel during the first week of the Summer Academy (June 18, 1‑2:30 pm).
  • Build authentic, meaningful, and professional relationships with participating students.
  • Maintain all course materials, attendance records, and schedules.
  • Communicate efficiently and clearly with all Upward Bound staff and residential mentors.
Qualifications
  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree with relevant teaching experience, or be an undergraduate student majoring in Education or a related field, or possess extensive teaching assistant experience and have earned a minimum of 30 college credits by June 2026.
  • Be able to provide own transportation to the Altoona campus for instructional days.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, mentoring, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Work effectively with high‑school youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Model maturity, sound judgment, common sense, and professionalism.
  • Enforce program and university policies consistently and objectively.
  • Pass all required background checks for working with minors.
Schedule
  • Summer Academy:
    Monday, June 15 – Friday, July 24.
  • Math Instructional Week at Altoona Campus:
    July 6‑10.
  • Meet Your Instructors (June 18) via Zoom.
Professional Learning and Work Expectations
  • Paid mandatory professional learning is held remotely from May through the start of the Summer Academy; instructors must be able to use Zoom.
  • Paid mandatory one‑on‑one with the Coordinator is scheduled at the instructor’s leisure before or during June.
  • Daytime and afternoon class sessions: 9:30 AM – 12 PM and 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Hourly pay: $35.00.
  • Expected total hours: 75, including curricular planning, instruction, and other duties.
  • Room and board may be provided during all residential weeks.
  • Program‑related admission fees for museums, science centers, and other activities are provided, if applicable.
Background Checks & Clearances
  • PA State Police Criminal Background Check
  • PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form
  • Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check
  • Additional applicable background checks required by the university.
