POSITION SPECIFICS

The Mechanical Systems & Design Department under the Engineering Systems Research and Development Division within the Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking motivated and talented Engineering Technologists whose primary tasking will be to design, build, and test mechanical hardware for undersea applications. You will work directly with engineers throughout the product lifecycle to create 3D models and associated drawings, perform basic engineering calculations, develop electro‑mechanical systems, procure the necessary hardware, and assemble and test hardware/systems.

YOU WILL
  • Create 3D models in Siemens NX
  • Create detailed drawings of components and assemblies
  • Perform tolerance stacks and apply appropriate tolerancing and GD&T
  • Collaborate with project leadership with the conceptual design of complex electromechanical systems and subsystems
  • Collaborate with engineering staff in developing, defining, and/or deriving requirements to support the design of engineering products
  • Develop assembly and test procedures
  • Assemble and test hardware
  • Support field testing
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR HIGHER LEVEL POSITIONS
  • Works independently on moderately complex work assignments, reviews progress, and evaluates results
  • Presents ideas, concepts, and instructions in a clear and persuasive manner to both internal and external audiences
  • Develops new techniques, concepts, and approaches and applies them to moderately complex and strategic and/or operational issues
  • Review the work of others to verify accuracy and conformance to required procedures and special instructions
  • Delegate and oversee lower level tasking
REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCES INCLUDE
  • 3D CAD design and engineering drawing development (Siemens NX preferred)
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Engineering calculations
  • Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience (Engineering Technologist – Senior Professional).
Bachelor's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience (Engineering Technologist – Advanced Professional). No required certifications.
