POSITION SPECIFICS

We are searching for a Mechanical Engineering Technologist to join our Specialized Hardware and Rapid Prototyping Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. In this role, you will support research and development engineers in project execution via design, fabrication, documentation, and test activities. ARL is an authorized DoD Skill Bridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate with engineering staff and senior engineering technologists in developing, defining, and/or deriving requirements to support the design of engineering products.
  • Perform design, development, fabrication, installation, and use of custom electrical, mechanical, and software subsystems.
  • Utilize computer-aided design software to develop electrical, mechanical, and/or software products.
  • Conduct tests, provide results, address issues, and recommend modifications related to electrical, mechanical, or software subsystems.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR HIGHER LEVEL POSITION
  • Collaborate with project leadership on the conceptual design of complex electromechanical systems and subsystems.
  • Guide and provide input for technical work activities performed by engineering support staff and/or less experienced engineering technologists.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new engineering products and tooling to support the development of project systems.
  • Prepare test plans, procedures, reports, and other forms of formal documentation.
  • Develop specialized electrical, mechanical, and/or software tools to support testing of complex electromechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with other research and enterprise offices at ARL to accomplish all phases of project development.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge within a mechanical engineering discipline and work towards developing advanced knowledge of design and analysis tools, test and measurement equipment, languages, and available products and services.
REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE AREAS
  • Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project).
  • Modeling software such as AutoCAD, Solid Works, Siemens NX.
  • Advanced manufacturing skills, including 3D printing, CNC operation, CNC programming, laser cutting.
  • DFMEA/PFMEA.
  • Operation of shop and hand tools, precision measurements, and drawing interpretation.
  • Mechanical assembly.
  • Experience working in government shipyards, understanding of various codes and shop workflows.
  • Maintenance and repair of naval vessels.
PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE AREAS
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings (mechanical and electrical) using CAD software.
  • Prior purchasing and reconciliation experience for Department of Defense.
  • Chemical management and Hazmat experience.
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher; willing to undergo a government background investigation if required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

If filled as Engineering Technologist – Senior Professional:
Bachelor's Degree plus 6+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination. If filled as Engineering Technologist – Advanced Professional:
Bachelor's Degree plus 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination. No required certifications.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment requires a successful background check in accordance with University policies. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and will need to obtain a government security clearance; a pre-employment drug screen is also required.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $68,200.00 – $ and may be impacted by geographic differential. Penn State provides a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision coverage, retirement plans, paid time off, and a 75% tuition discount for employees and eligible families.
