Job Overview
The Schatz Center for Tree Molecular Genetics in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management currently has openings for part‑time research assistants. Successful candidates will assist in research related to conservation and restoration genetics of forest trees. Preference will be given to full‑time registered Penn State undergraduate students.
Responsibilities- Setting up and maintaining experiments in the field, greenhouse, and lab.
- Field plot maintenance, including use of mowers and weed whackers.
- Field data collection and entry.
- Greenhouse maintenance: propagation and planting of trees.
- Processing plant material for sequencing, including DNA extractions and gel electrophoresis.
- Organizing lab equipment, supplies, and contributing to maintenance of shared lab spaces.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
- Willingness to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Organized and able to work independently as well as within a group.
- Interest in plant biology, geography, and the environment.
- Valid driver’s license; successful completion of motor vehicle records check required.
- Access to a personal vehicle is a plus but not required.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and occasionally lift or move material up to 50 lbs.
Employment will require successful completion of background checks in accordance with University policies and a motor vehicle records check due to job duties.
