Job Description and Position Requirements
We are seeking graduate students with artificial intelligence and machine learning experience to join the Visualization and Decision Support Division of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. Interns will contribute to cutting‑edge AI technologies, participate in a Kaggle‑style competition, and develop solutions for computer vision and geospatial understanding.
Selected interns will serve as active, hands‑on contributors to the research staff role includes:
- Working within an agile development environment with developers, scrum master, and product owners to scope, develop, and deliver quality software solutions.
- Contributing to the research and development of algorithmic solutions for sponsor requirements, focusing on machine learning and AI.
- Developing, testing, and transitioning front‑end and back‑end software applications to various IT environments.
- Supporting machine learning model development using tools such as PyTorch, Pandas, PostgreSQL, AWS, Docker, and related technologies.
- Collaborating with cross‑functional teams to integrate machine learning models into existing systems and create new ones to meet project needs.
- Students enrolled in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or related majors.
- Bachelor’s degree and currently enrolled in a master’s or higher level degree program.
- Prior experience in machine learning is preferred.
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a government security clearance.
- Successful completion of a background check and drug screen is required.
Internship is paid and requires up to 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters and 40 hours per week over summer. The position can be located in State College, PA or Reston, VA; relocation and housing are not provided.
