Job Summary/Basic Function:
The primary purpose of the Vice Chair, Clinical Skills Education at the Boonshoft School of Medicine (BSOM) is to oversee the comprehensive longitudinal instruction in clinical skills within the BSOM curriculum, including functioning of the Skills Assessment and Training Center (SATC) and related programs. This includes curriculum development, supervision of scheduled activities, administering clinical instruction, and providing leadership essential for the success of both the Center and its participants.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Physician, MD or DO, having experience with and demonstrated interest in UME teaching.
  • Clinical experience in their primary specialty.
  • Undergraduate medical education curricula experience with a focus on clinical skills.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Assistant Professor level candidates must meet all requirements above.
  • Associate Professor level candidates must meet all requirements above, plus have at least three years’ experience as an Assistant Professor with an exemplary scholarly portfolio and supervisory experience and meet all Associate Professor Promotion requirements.
  • Full Professor candidates must fulfill all the requirements of Associate Professor, plus have at least five years’ experience at the Associate Professor level along with an exemplary scholarly portfolio and leadership experience and meet all Professor Promotion requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Clinical background in Family, Internal, or Emergency Medicine or Pediatrics.
Essential Functions and Percent of Time

Leadership 40%

  • Supervise all scheduled activities within the SATC for medical students in every phase of the BSOM Wright Curriculum, offering the leadership, administration, and clinical instruction required for the success of the SATC and associated programs.
  • Recruit, supervise, and train SATC Staff.
  • Design, build, deliver, and assess innovative clinical skills educational and assessment methods.
  • Provide oversight of, with accountability for the Simulated Patient (SP) program, ensuring its quality, consistency, and integration across the clinical skills curriculum.
  • Recruit and train preceptors and teaching faculty.
  • Develop Simulated Patient Encounter (SPE) and Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) scenarios for BSOM and external clients, including local Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant programs.
  • Organize workshops relevant to the SATC operations.
  • Provide support and mentoring to students requiring clinical skills remediation.
  • Supervise MS4 medical students enrolled in SATC academic medicine elective.
  • Serve as lead instructor for teaching MS1 interview and physical examination (PE) skills courses.
  • Direct small group facilitators for clinical reasoning sessions as well as other longitudinal clinical skills.
  • Provide direct observation and scoring of SPE or OSCE simulated patient activities.
  • Provide in-person, 1:1 video reviews and provision of feedback for students with low or failing scores on assessment OSCEs.

Core Faculty / Teaching 25%

  • Participate in classroom didactics and clinical supervision of WSUBSOM learners.
  • Teach as needed in other curricular modules related to content area expertise.
  • Participate in learner evaluations and mentorship.
  • Participate in committees, meetings, and other related items.

Other duties as assigned 5%
