Academic Advisor I (T236994)
This position involves understanding the history and role of academic advising in higher education, core values, theories, approaches, and methods. The advisor will articulate a personal philosophy of advising, build rapport, maintain relationships, and provide guidance on course selection, prerequisites, career planning, and continuing higher education. The advisor proactively identifies and supports students who are not meeting academic expectations and coordinates support services.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Understands the history and role of academic advising in higher education.
- Understands core values and theories relevant to academic advising.
- Understands various approaches and methods in academic advising.
- Understands various outcomes of academic advising.
- Understands how equitable and inclusive environments are created and maintained.
- Adheres to ethical guidelines outlined by the university and National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and articulates personal philosophy of advising.
- Creates rapport and maintains relationships with students.
- Communicates in a culturally inclusive and competent manner and facilitates student appointments.
- Continues to develop oral and written communication skills.
- Provides guidance and advice to students on course selection, prerequisites, career planning, and continuing higher education.
- Proactively identifies and provides support to students not meeting academic expectations (e.g., warning, probation, suspension).
- Contacts unregistered students for outreach and retention.
- Coordinates support services for students, including referrals to other offices.
- Assists with student recruitment, orientation, and retention (some evening and weekend work required).
- Serves on special committees as needed and maintains accurate student records, adhering to confidentiality standards.
- Prepares special and recurring reports regarding student status and assists with course curriculum scheduling initiatives.
- Processes applications for degrees.
- Pursues continuing education beyond hire via coursework, webinars, and conferences; attends training within the unit or at UAB level to increase knowledge and build a cross‑campus colleague network.
- Seeks advice and mentorship from senior advisors and directors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Range: $37,345 - $60,690
QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education or a related field and at least two (2) years of related experience are required. Work experience may NOT substitute for the education requirement.
Preferred Qualifications- Degree in higher education, counseling education or a related field.
