Position: HISTOLOGY TECHNICIAN

Job Description - HISTOLOGY TECHNICIAN (T233572)

To perform a variety of routine histological procedures related to preparation of tissue for microscopic examination by a pathologist. To perform procedures including embedding, microtomy, staining, and other special techniques needed for diagnosis.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Embeds tissue and performs microtomy.
  • Receives and prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination, including embedding, microtomy, staining, and special techniques needed for microscopic diagnosis.
  • Maintains laboratory work areas in good order, including frozen section lab and gross room.
  • Provides assistance to pathologists as needed.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment in frozen section and gross rooms according to instrument manufacturer, safety and quality control protocols.
  • Documents appropriately.
  • Utilizes laboratory information systems effectively to determine status of specimens.
  • Receives and prepares specimens for gross examination and dissection by the pathologist.
  • May perform high‑complexity testing and grossing of specimens.
  • Maintains accountability for a safe environment for patients and others.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability for professional growth.
  • Supports quality and fiscal goals for department and institution.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Range

$47,665 - $60,000

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required. Currently certified or eligible for certification as a Histotechnician (HT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required. If eligible for certification, must be certified within two (2) years of date of hire.

Preferred Skills & Knowledge
  • BS degree in biological sciences or Medical Assistant degree
  • Formal training in an accredited histology technology program leading to an Associate of Science Degree preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of experience working in a clinical anatomic pathology laboratory.
  • Prior experience working with physicians and patients in ambulatory or inpatient settings.
