Data Scientist, Data Analyst
DATA SCIENTIST (T232769)
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Med - Pulmonary/Allergy/Critical Care, is seeking a Data Scientist who applies knowledge of statistics, machine learning, programming, data modeling, simulation, and advanced mathematics to recognize patterns, identify opportunities, pose business questions, and make valuable discoveries that lead to the development and improvement of processes. The role involves identifying limitations or potential issues with datasets that may impact performance of machine learning algorithms, retraining models as needed, aiding investigators and stakeholders in validating results, generating detailed reports and presentations, and mentoring junior staff members.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Applies knowledge of data science, genetic epidemiology, biostatistics, AI/ML and programming to identify 'omic risk factors of disease.
- Designs, develops and implements software tools and analytical procedures supporting bioinformatics analysis.
- Provides computational support services such as study design, data management and data migration.
- Stays current with evolving multi-omics technologies and computational tools, introducing innovative methods where they can add value.
- Communicates key findings clearly through reports, visualizations, and presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Mentors and trains junior staff members.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Range: $85,600 - $111,280
QualificationsDoctorate degree in a related field OR Master's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferred skills & Knowledge- Master's and/or PhD degree in data science, genetic epidemiology, biostatistics, computer science, or statistical genetics.
- Strong working knowledge of 'omic analyses.
- Experience in a high-performance computing environment.
- Experience with analysis of complex data specifically whole genome sequence data via cloud computing, transcriptomics (single cell and spatial) and metabolomics data.
- Experience working in Linux-based, command-line environments.
- Proficient in scripting languages such as R, Python, and shell.
- Knowledge of best practices of reproducible and scalable research such as version control (git) and environment managing systems (e.g., conda, Docker, Singularity).
- Proficiency in the visualization of omics data.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with project management tools such as Asana.
