Sterile Supply Equip Tech – Hospital Maintenance

The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.

We’re seeking a dependable, detail-oriented technician to help keep our hospital’s sterile processing equipment running safely and efficiently. In this role, you’ll inspect, test, and maintain sterilizers, washers, and related systems throughout the hospital‑ ensuring the equipment that supports patient care operates safely, reliably, and at peak performance.

Accountabilities
  • Inspect & Maintain Equipment:
    Performs routine inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance on sterilization and support equipment. Operates, cleans, adjusts, tightens, and lubricates mechanical and electrical components.
  • Ensure Safety & Reliability:
    Verifies equipment performance and safety after each use, following manufacturer and departmental standards.
  • Troubleshoot & Repair:
    Identifies issues, assists with calibration, and support senior technicians to resolve malfunctions.
  • Manage Parts & Records:
    Helps maintain parts inventory and accurately document service, repairs, and equipment history.
  • Follow Compliance Standards:
    Ensures all work meets infection control, safety, and regulatory guidelines (Joint Commission, manufacturer standards, etc.).
  • Professional Development:
    Attends departmental meetings and required training sessions, completes training within established time frames, and stays current with industry standards, procedures, and best practices.
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years related preventative maintenance, mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing experience, as well as experience using hand and power tools and troubleshooting and problem-solving required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Associate's degree from a vocational/technical school or community college and/or experience working in a healthcare facility preferred.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations

Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Compensation & Schedule
  • Starting Range: $20.80 - $29.00 per hour (based on experience, internal equity, and UAB guidelines)
  • Full Classification Range: $20.80 - $27.00 - $33.80 per hour
  • Determination:
    Final offer based on experience, internal equity, budget, and UAB guidelines
  • Shifts:

    Multiple shifts available; flexibility and on-call rotation required.
  • Essential Personnel:
    This role is designated as essential and must report during emergencies or inclement weather.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Experience troubleshooting steam, water, and pneumatic process control and PLC systems
  • Ability to perform pipe fitting methods
  • Basic plumbing and electrical skills
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Maintenance knowledge of steam autoclaves and instrument washers
  • Knowledge of safety standards and guidelines (Joint Commission, Manufacturer)
  • Strong technical, mechanical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • General knowledge of principles and methods of sterilization, steam generators, and industrial controls
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish, and maintain, effective working relationships with guests, contractors, customers, management, and staff
  • Ability to work efficiently independently, productively, and with minimal supervision
  • Attention to detail skills
  • Ability to handle multiple and changing priorities
  • Knowledge of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization techniques
  • Ability to maintain a clean work site and area that minimally interferes with operations
  • Ability to work an on-call work schedule
