Position Summary
The Director will provide leadership for the undergraduate and graduate Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programs and the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating programming that supports non-native English-speaking students and prepares future TESOL educators, while ensuring academic excellence through curriculum oversight, faculty support, and alignment with institutional priorities and accreditation standards.
The Director will serve as a primary instructor for both TESOL and ESL courses.
* Program Leadership and Administration
* Develop, implement, and evaluate the TESOL and ESL curriculum to meet academic and institutional standards, including both undergraduate and graduate-level courses.
* Supervise and mentor TESOL and ESL faculty and staff, including recruiting, hiring, training, and performance evaluation.
* Manage program budgets, including planning expenditures and resource allocation.
* Ensure the program complies with university policies and applicable accreditation standards, through rigorous program assessment and continuous improvement processes.
* Collaborate with admissions and marketing teams to support recruitment efforts, including outreach to prospective students and participation in promotional activities.
* Instruction and Academic Support
* Teach 24 load hours annually, both TESOL and ESL courses.
* Ensure a high standard of instruction, using best pedagogical practices
* Assess student needs and guide language development strategies.
* Oversee student placement testing, academic progress monitoring, and program assessments.
* Student Engagement and Support
* Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
* Collaborate with student services to provide holistic support, including advising, tutoring, and cultural adjustment resources.
* Organize cultural events and activities to promote language practice and cross-cultural understanding.
* Collaboration and Outreach
* Work with university faculty and staff to facilitate the integration of ESL students into the broader campus community.
* Partner with admissions to support recruiting and retaining international and multilingual students.
* Build relationships with local churches, organizations, and communities to enhance outreach and support for ESL students.
* Consider new pathways to expand the circle of learners.
E.g., establish non-credit courses providing TESOL training to community and church partners.
* Collaborate with university faculty and staff to develop international partnerships and university programming which could lead to expansion of Taylor's international offerings.
* Some evening and weekend commitments may be required for events, student engagement, or recruitment efforts.
* Faith Integration and Leadership
* Serve as a spiritual leader within the program, integrating a biblical worldview into instruction and program activities.
* Model Christian character and foster students' spiritual growth alongside academic development.
* Candidates must hold a doctoral degree (preferred) or master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Education, or a related field.
* Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in TESOL and/or ESL-related environments.
* Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations, including international students.
* Record of excellent teaching in higher education.
* Relevant administrative experience to support leadership responsibilities as director, with preferred familiarity with accreditation standards for TESOL and ESL program.
* Demonstrated commitment to Christian higher education.
* Strong organizational and communication skills.
