The Registered Nurse Manager (RN Manager) is responsible for the overall clinical, operational, and administrative leadership of the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, safe, efficient, and compliant peri-operative care, while driving staff performance, patient experience, and operational excellence. The RN Manager oversees daily ASC operations, staffing, regulatory compliance, and clinical quality outcomes, while directly managing nursing and technical staff.
This position functions as both a clinical leader and business operator, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, regulatory standards, and financial performance expectations.
- Ensure delivery of safe, high-quality peri-operative nursing care across pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative services.
- Establish and enforce clinical protocols, policies, and evidence-based practices.
- Monitor patient outcomes and implement quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain compliance with all applicable regulatory bodies including CMS, AAAHC, and state licensing requirements.
- Serve as escalation point for clinical issues, adverse events, and patient safety concerns.
- Direct and oversee daily ASC operations, ensuring optimal patient flow from admission through discharge.
- Develop and implement staffing models, scheduling, and productivity standards aligned with surgical volume and financial targets.
- Manage resource allocation, including staff, equipment, and supplies.
- Partner with leadership to support budget adherence, cost control, and operational efficiency.
- Ensure effective coordination across clinical, anesthesia, surgical, and administrative teams.
- Directly supervise nursing staff, surgical techs, sterile processing staff, and support personnel.
- Recruit, hire, onboard, train, and evaluate staff performance.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and corrective action when necessary.
- Ensure staff maintain required competencies, certifications, and ongoing education.
- Maintain full compliance with CMS, OSHA, infection control, and accreditation standards.
- Oversee documentation accuracy, audits, and reporting requirements.
- Lead preparation for surveys and inspections.
- Identify compliance risks and implement corrective actions proactively.
- Serve as the primary liaison between ASC staff, physicians, anesthesia providers, and executive leadership.
- Communicate operational updates, performance metrics, and issues to the Regional ASC Director.
- Lead staff meetings, clinical reviews, and performance discussions.
- Ensure clear communication of policies, procedures, and expectations across all team members.
- Support financial performance through labor management, supply utilization, and efficiency improvements.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) including:
- Case volume
- Turnover times
- Patient satisfaction
- Staffing ratios
- Drive initiatives that improve profitability while maintaining clinical excellence.
The RN Manager may need to provide direct patient care coverage as required, including:
Pre-Operative- Conduct patient assessments and verify surgical readiness.
- Ensure informed consent and pre-op preparation compliance.
- Oversee intra-operative care, sterile technique, and patient safety.
- Coordinate surgical team activities and ensure proper documentation.
- Monitor recovery, assess patient stability, and ensure discharge readiness.
- Educate patients on post-operative care instructions.
- Direct supervision of nursing staff, surgical technicians, and support personnel.
- Responsible for performance management, scheduling, and staffing decisions.
- Completion of accredited Registered Nursing Program from college or technical school.
- A minimum of 5 years RN experience in a hospital and/or surgery center setting preferred.
- Minimum 2-3 years of leadership or management experience.
- Strong background in peri-operative nursing (pre-op, OR, PACU).
- Current, valid California Registered Nursing (RN) License required.
- Current ACLS and BLS are required.
- Clinical excellence in peri-operative nursing.
