The Department of Chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for up to two positions as Instructor/Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Teaching Assistant Professor in General Chemistry area.
Responsibilities
Duties in the Instructor/Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Teaching Assistant Professor position are:
* Preparing and presenting contents in lecture and laboratory courses in General Chemistry.
* Supervising and mentoring teaching assistants, holding office hours to meet with students outside of class time, writing and grading examinations, and assigning grades.
* Coordinating and communicating with the Associate Director of Teaching Labs and lab staff about general chemistry lab courses and experiments.
* Attending General Chemistry area meetings and serving on departmental and University-wide committees on as needed basis.
* Revising course content and syllabi to meet General Education certification and recertification.
* Developing content and teaching online General Chemistry courses that fulfill the University online course certification requirement.
* Serving on one departmental committee a year.
Duties in Senior Lecturer and Teaching Assistant Professor positions also include substantial additions, improvements, or other contributions to the chemistry curriculum, such as new course development, study abroad experiences, and innovative teaching methods that improve student learning.
Duties in the Teaching Assistant Professor position also include substantial educational and technical research in the chemical sciences and supervision and mentorship of undergraduate researchers.
Qualifications
Applicants for the Instructor rank must (i) hold a Masters degree in chemistry, or a closely related field and (ii) have demonstrated potential for high-quality college or university-level teaching in chemistry. (iii) Record of teaching effectiveness that meets the following elements of teaching excellence:
* Well-designed
* Well-delivered
* Inclusive and ethical
* Reflective and evolving
Applicants for the Lecturer rank must (i) hold a PhD in chemistry, or a closely related field and (ii) have demonstrated potential for high-quality college or university-level teaching in chemistry. (iii) Record of teaching effectiveness that meets the following elements of teaching excellence:
* Well-designed
* Well-delivered
* Inclusive and ethical
* Reflective and evolving
Applicants for the Senior Lecturer rank must (i) hold a PhD in chemistry, or a closely related field, (ii) have demonstrated effectiveness in university-level teaching in chemistry, and (iii) Record of teaching effectiveness that meets the following elements of teaching excellence:
* Well-designed
* Well-delivered
* Inclusive and ethical
* Reflective and evolving
(iv) experience in curriculum development or current educational technologies. Experience and/or a strong interest in the creation of new and innovative course materials and experiments will enhance an application.
Applicants for the Teaching Assistant Professor must (i) hold a PhD in chemistry, or a closely related field, (ii) have demonstrated potential for high-quality college or university-level teaching in chemistry, and (iii) have a strong track record of research in chemistry or chemical education as evidenced through scholarly publications and invited talks. Candidates must have an interest in the development of a research program in chemistry or chemical education alongside their teaching and pedagogical duties.
Salary and Appointment Information
The positions are on a 9-month service basis, but with an early start date of Aug 1, 2026. The position is renewable yearly based on funding and strong performance reviews. Renewed appointments will be on a 9-month service basis (Aug 16-May 15). The 9-month salary ranges are as follows:
* Instructor or Lecturer is $60,000-$63,000
* Senior Lecturer is $65,000-$68,000
* Teaching Assistant Professor is $65,000-$68,000
Courses will primarily be taught in person on the Urbana-Champaign campus, with the potential for online teaching as deemed necessary. The positions are eligible for sponsorship except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee.
