The Grainger College of Engineering - Department of Bioengineering

The Department of Bioengineering in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Programs. The department is home to 569 undergraduate students across 3 degrees:
Bioengineering, CS + BIOE, and Neural Engineering. It is experiencing an exciting period of growth marked by significant increases in course offerings and student numbers. The person in this position will oversee the recruitment, admissions, advising, and administration operations for the department’s undergraduate programs office.

Duties & Responsibilities Administration and Operations
  • Manage the day-to-day administration and operations of the Bioengineering undergraduate program office.
  • Oversee undergraduate recruitment, admissions, and advising operations in Bioengineering, ensuring that departmental undergraduate policies and procedures are implemented and comply with those of the University.
  • Meet regularly with the Associate Head and Director of Operations to discuss program development, enrollment management, course access, and curricular issues and collaborate on solutions, when needed.
  • In collaboration with faculty, oversee activities associated with class schedule development, early enrollment material and advising preparations, enrollment management, drop and probation reviews, academic infraction and integrity reviews, readmission decisions, study abroad course reviews and articulations, experimental course reviews, scholarship and award selections, transfer request evaluations, secondary field and honor contracts reviews, curriculum modification reviews, student recruitment and retention, graduation matters, and incoming undergraduate student orientation.
  • Organize meetings of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and other committees associated with the undergraduate program.
  • Maintain data pertaining to undergraduate programs, including collections for the accreditation process, departmental reviews, and various surveys when requested. Participate in the ABET accreditation process and serve in a leadership role in departmental curriculum requirements as well as applicable policies. Fulfill undergraduate program data requests for policy discussions, proposals, and initiatives.
  • In collaboration with Bioengineering Marketing and Communications, oversee the website content upgrades and assist in the development of marketing materials used for recruitment. Identify opportunities to promote the undergraduate program through the departmental e-newsletter and annual report.
Advising, Student Services and Curriculum Management
  • Maintain an appropriate size advising caseload providing curriculum direction, degree auditing, career counseling, curricular modifications and approval of plans of study.
  • Attend Chief Advisor meetings in The Grainger College of Engineering and if appropriate, serve as the department’s representative in college and campus meetings and functions related to undergraduate matters.
  • Serve as the primary departmental point of contact for undergraduate student conflict resolution and oversee support for undergraduate students, including those on probation and in need of additional campus resources.
  • Represent the department at recruiting events. Meet with prospective families to provide personalized guidance and support throughout the admissions process.
  • Advise departmental leadership on new and revised curricular proposal development for majors, minors and certificates.
Supervision and Other Duties
  • Supervise and support professional and clerical staff, along with student workers in the undergraduate program office.
  • Assume additional duties to further the mission of the department.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline, higher education, student affairs, college student personnel, counseling, education, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of professional work experience in undergraduate admissions, student affairs, undergraduate advising or related work experience in higher education.
