Academic Advisor – Gies College of Business
The Office of Undergraduate Programs at the University of Illinois' Gies College of Business supports undergraduate students from admission through graduation. We provide academic and social support to ensure students are connected and able to achieve their goals while at Gies.
Job SummaryProvide academic advising and guidance to undergraduate students enrolled in the Gies College of Business.
Duties & Responsibilities- Engage in purposeful discussions with students to learn about their course performance and interests and assist with the selection of an appropriate major.
- Provide guidance regarding academic and career options.
- Refer students to appropriate academic, career, and student affairs support resources.
- Articulate study abroad courses for undergraduate students.
- Provide new student registration advising and assistance to first‑year and transfer students.
- Monitor students’ academic progress toward graduation using the appropriate systems; identify and proactively reach out to advisees to support successful academic progress.
- Thoroughly document all student contacts using the advising portal system.
- Collaborate with other advisors to maintain and develop advising strategies that support Gies students.
- Research and assess current programs, as assigned by the Director, to evaluate their success and recommend improvements or new programming based on outcomes.
- Coordinate programs and events related to major and career exploration, academic success skills, student transition, and other relevant areas.
- Collaborate with college and campus units to support students’ academic success and professional development.
- Support Office of Undergraduate Affairs initiatives and programs as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree
- At least two years of experience in higher education or a related field. Experience may include graduate work.
- Master’s degree
- Experience working directly with undergraduate students in higher education, particularly with first‑generation, low socioeconomic status, underrepresented, or international students.
- Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate student education and ability to respond to students’ needs and concerns.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Proven ability to build relationships and collaborate with colleagues within and outside the unit.
This is a 100% full‑time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12‑month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search closes. The budgeted salary range for the position is $54,000–$58,000 annually and is commensurate with experience.
