Lecturer positions – Department of Philosophy – University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

The Department of Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign invites applications for two Lecturer positions.

Duties & Responsibilities

Position 1

  • Prepare and present instructional content for courses in Formal Epistemology, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind/Cognitive Science, or Philosophy of Mathematics.
  • Ability to teach a course in Philosophical Foundations of Computer Science and/or Advanced Logic is an asset.

Position 2

  • Prepare and present instructional content for courses in Ethics, Social/Political Philosophy, or History of Philosophy.

Both positions

  • Teach three courses per semester, with six courses total including introductory and advanced levels.
  • Monitor and mentor teaching assistants.
  • Hold office hours to meet with students outside of class.
  • Write, grade, and assign examinations.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Philosophy or related area by the time of appointment.
  • Record of teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level.
  • Research experience/training in the focus area of the position.
Salary & Appointment Information

Full‑time, 9‑month, non‑tenure track positions. Renewal contingent on funding, performance reviews, and sufficient course enrollments. Target start date is August 16, 2026. The budgeted salary is $60,000. The position is not eligible for work‑authorization sponsorship and requires full‑time campus presence per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy.

  • A statement of teaching philosophy.
  • A teaching portfolio that includes:
  • Materials from two different courses recently taught (syllabi, policies, schedule of topics/assignments, blank copies of assignments/examinations, and other documents that demonstrate teaching effectiveness).
  • Records of three classroom observations by peers during the instructor/lecturer service period.
  • Longitudinal student evaluations covering every semester of service as instructor/lecturer.
  • Name and email addresses for three professional references.
