Job DescriptionUnder the direction of the Directors of Multilingual Programs, the Secondary Multilingual Program Coordinator (UHS or UMS) assists the program by providing leadership, guidance, and support for the multilingual program at their assigned school. Coordinators will lead by implementing and monitoring the effectiveness of the secondary multilingual programs at the designated school and work. They will also work in conjunction with the Tier One Curriculum Implementation teachers to support the effective implementation of the USD 116 core curriculum, instructional framework, and assessment systems as necessary to improve student achievement and build teacher capacity around the core Language Arts (English, Spanish, French) and Math curriculum.
The Secondary Multilingual Coordinator will also work with students in an assigned class, small intervention groups, or through co-taught lessons as needed based on data.
- Assist with coordinating the assessment framework for Bilingual and ESL Programs from 6-12. Coordinates screening and assessment of all new emergent bilingual students with the WIDA Screener, ACCESS, IAR, and other assessments as necessary at 6-12.
- Assist with analyzing assessment data and provide suggestions for instructional modifications and interventions that enhance student learning and improve test performance.
- Provide guidance to staff in working with linguistically and culturally diverse children and families, specifically in the areas of support and involvement of the home language, integration of culture in the school setting, cross-cultural issues/issues of language and culture, the acquisition of English as a second language (ESL), communication with parents and parent involvement, culturally appropriate assessment.
- Leads general classroom teachers, Tier One Intensive Teachers, and grade-level teams in identifying teaching and learning needs based on student data.
- Leads teachers on best practices in culturally and linguistically responsive teaching, student engagement, data-based decision-making, and implementing district-adopted curriculums at all grade levels, in all disciplines, and for ML students.
- Maintain confidentiality and the privacy of individual teachers, students, and families.
- Champion, promote, and increase racial equity, social justice, diversity, multiculturalism practices, and awareness for all staff and students.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of adult learning in order to meet the individual needs of teachers, including their varied learning styles, knowledge, skills, experiences, cultures, and backgrounds.
- Model, lead, and participate in the courageous conversations necessary to support the co‑teaching model and processes to analyze student data.
- Provide constructive feedback to foster co‑teaching skills and build capacity for Tier One Intensive and general classroom teachers.
*** ESL co‑teaching is the current model used in math and ELA for ESL support - Meets and instructs classes, small groups, or individual students as needed. Uses a wide range of instructional strategies and technologies to meet and enhance the needs of a diverse student population (The ML Coordinator will teach no more than two class periods per day).
- Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request.
- Co‑teaching classes as determined from ESL and new curriculum implementation lens.
- Analyze student data from both formative and summative assessments to drive differentiated instruction and data‑based decision‑making for students.
- Provide staff development on effective instructional strategies and data‑based decision‑making to teaching teams, as well as small and large faculty groups.
- Participate as part of the school’s leadership team for continuous school improvement, and attend school improvement meetings as scheduled by the building principal.
