Academic Advisor and Program Coordinator

Provide an exceptional student experience by serving student needs related to course scheduling, course registration, academic advising, new student orientation, and other student services. Meet students' educational and career goals by helping them identify their goals and aligning their path to success.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Advising

  • Provide academic advising to both degree and non-degree students in reviewing of academic performance, progress towards completion of degree requirements, course selection/registration, as well as program, Graduate College and University policies and procedures.
  • Advise and assist students with academic, probationary, and financial concerns on possible courses of action and refer students to appropriate campus resources when applicable.
  • Provide advice and assistance to prospective students with regards to program requirements, degree planning and course selection questions.
  • Provide New Student Registration advising and onboarding to admitted students.
  • Thoroughly document all student contact and records using the advising portal system records including scheduling, overrides, petitions, degree audits, etc.

Enrollment

  • Design, implement, and execute a student communication plan that keeps current and prospective students, as well as alumni, engaged and affiliated with our college and university, including social media, emails, and text messages.
  • Develop and revise informational materials, resources, and other content.
  • Serve as an admissions officer for admitting students and providing information to the admissions committee on applicants who need secondary review while maintaining accurate and confidential records.
  • Coordinate efforts to increase the yield of admitted students to enrollment.
  • Coordinate with course management and eLearning teams to ensure positive student experience.
  • Respond to inquiries across social media platforms and identify strategies to grow audience reach.
  • Represent the program at virtual and in-person recruiting events, webinars, and conferences.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Allergies to hay, straw or animal dander may cause discomfort based on the location within the College of Veterinary Medicine. Work Schedule, Travel, or Other Job Expectations Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required to meet the online advising and event needs of the student population in the program. Normal office setting.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Bachelor's degree in social work, education, or relevant field is required. Experience at least two years of professional experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Education Preferred:
Master's degree in social work, education, or relevant field Experience Preferred:
Two years of experience providing student academic support in a higher education setting. Experience working with a diverse student population. Experience with a variety of social media platforms. Experience administering and assessing programs.

Skills and Abilities

Exceptional and demonstrable customer service skills. Excellent organizational skill and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities. Proven success in managing across multiple stakeholders. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must demonstrate a service-oriented attitude and enthusiasm for working with faculty and students. Strong working knowledge of computer-related databases and office-related software.

Familiarity and using video-based web conferencing technology. Knowledge of University of Illinois and Academic Advising computer applications, including Banner and Student Records Systems. Understanding student development issues as they relate to advising and the student experience.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/17/2026.
