The Philosophy Department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, seeks candidates with expertise in Early Modern Philosophy, for tenure-track/tenured position at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level with a target start date of August 16, 2027. The successful candidate can expect to teach 4 courses per year (2 per semester) at the lower- and upper-division undergraduate and graduate levels. Our department has particular instructional needs in graduate-level courses in Early Modern and with our upper-classmen capstone class.

Duties for this position include teaching assigned courses, graduate and undergraduate advising; research in the candidate's areas of expertise (including Early Modern Philosophy) that will result in publications with appropriate journals and university presses (or other equivalent academic presses), as well as other research outputs, such as grants, fellowships, awards, and scholarly presentations; and service that includes participation in faculty meetings, departmental committees and other departmental initiatives as assigned, as well as service to the college, university, and profession.

Qualifications

Ph.D in philosophy or a related discipline and evidence of ability to contribute significantly to the department and discipline through research, teaching, service, and leadership. Candidates whose PhD may be delayed but will complete all the Ph.D. requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed at the rank of Instructor. After the Ph.D. requirement is met, the appointment will be changed to Assistant Professor.

Applicants at the Assistant Professor level must demonstrate evidence of a promising research agenda and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Applicants at the Associate/Full Professor level must have an established record in research, teaching, and service.

All candidates should demonstrate evidence of creativity and success in teaching at levels appropriate to experience. For associate and full candidates, we expect accomplishment at all levels (lower and upper-level undergraduate and graduate) and scholarly research. This includes teaching graduate-level courses in Early Modern Philosophy and courses equivalent to our upper-classmen capstone course. In addition, all successful candidates must demonstrate experience with fostering or the ability to foster an inclusive and collaborative teaching, learning, departmental, and research environment where all can thrive.

Salary and Appointment Information

This is a full-time, 9-month appointment, tenure-track/tenured position. The budgeted salary range for the position is $77,000 to $85,000 at the Assistant Professor level, $85,000 to $100,000 at the Associate Professor level, and $100,000 to $135,000 at the Full Professor level, for a 9-month service basis (paid over 12 months). The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate, including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline;

internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs. This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy. This position is eligible for sponsorship for work authorization, except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 federal fee.
