The Department of Economics invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level with expertise in the impact of AI on the economy, whose research develops or relies extensively on the use of novel AI tools, and whose courses could include some aspects of the intersection of AI and economics.

Successful candidates are expected to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, establish and maintain an active and independent research program, and provide service to the department, the university, and the economics profession.
The Department offers a Ph.D. degree, a professional Master’s degree (MSPE), and three undergraduate degrees (B.A. in Economics, B.S. in Econometrics and Quantitative Economics, and B.S. in Computer Science and Economics). - Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Economics or an equivalent degree, or expecting to receive the Ph.D. before the starting date of employment. Candidates whose Ph.D. may be delayed but will complete all the Ph.D. requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed at the rank of Instructor. After the Ph.D. requirement is met, the appointment will be changed to Assistant Professor.
Information
The budgeted salary range for the position is $185,000 to $192,000, for a 9-month service basis (paid over 12 months). Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the full range for a position. The target starting date is August 16, 2027.
This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy. This position is eligible for sponsorship for work authorization, except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee.
