Job Summary

The Building Automation Management Engineer is responsible for the overall leadership, technical direction, and operational management of the campus Building Automation System (BAS) and Electronic Access Control (EAC) programs. This position manages the DDC Specialist I–V classification series, BAS design staff, and provides strategic oversight of system architecture, design, programming standards, capital project integration, staff development, and 24/7 operational reliability. The Manager serves as the primary technical authority and administrative lead for BAS/EAC systems, ensuring alignment with campus standards, shop drawing design, energy management goals, life‑safety requirements, and long‑term infrastructure planning.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Supervision
    • Directly supervise, manage, and evaluate Building Automation staff.
    • Establish work priorities, staffing plans, performance expectations, and professional development goals.
    • Oversee promotional evaluations, succession planning, and skills progression within the DDC Specialist series.
    • Foster a culture of safety, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Technical Oversight & System Governance
    • Provide technical authority for BAS and EAC programming standards, system architecture, global programming practices, and integrations.
    • Approve advanced programming strategies, server‑level configurations, network design, and third‑party integrations.
    • Ensure system reliability, redundancy, and system migration for BAS/EAC platforms.
    • Provide support and oversight of building analytics.
  • Capital Projects & Engineering Coordination
    • Serve as the primary BAS/EAC representative for capital projects, renovations, and major system upgrades.
    • Review and provide insight to specifications, sequences of operation, shop drawings, submittals, and commissioning documentation for compliance with campus standards.
    • Coordinate with engineering, construction management, vendors, and manufacturers throughout project life cycles.
  • Strategic Planning & Continuous Improvement
    • Lead long‑term planning for BAS/EAC/FDD modernization, expansion, and lifecycle replacement.
    • Analyze system performance, utilization, alarms, trends, and energy data to support operational and sustainability goals.
    • Assist in development and maintain standards, policies, documentation, and best practices.
  • Operational Support & Incident Management
    • Provide leadership during critical system outages, emergencies, and after‑hours incidents.
    • Escalate and coordinate complex troubleshooting involving multiple trades, IT, vendors, or manufacturers.
    • Ensure appropriate 24/7 emergency coverage and on‑call rotation within the DDC group.
  • Training, Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Ensure consistent training and knowledge transfer across the DDC team.
    • Act as the primary point of contact for campus stakeholders regarding BAS/EAC capabilities, limitations, and initiatives.
    • Communicate system impacts, planned outages, and major changes to affected groups.
  • Other Duties
    • Perform other duties as assigned in support of Utilities & Energy Services objectives. Adhere to F&S mission, vision, and values.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Facilities Management, Information Technology, Building Automation, or a closely related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in Building Automation Systems, including advanced programming, system architecture, and/or integration.
  • Demonstrated experience managing technical staff.
  • Demonstrated experience with enterprise‑level BAS platforms (e.g., Siemens, Schneider Electric).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Registration as Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois
  • Experience in work management systems (specifically, Asset Works AiM software)
  • Work experience in a university environment
  • Experience in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications
  • Experience in managing crafts and trades work functions
