The Energy Sense Resilience Center (Energy Sense) is currently searching for a Visiting Energy Specialist to support its mission by performing energy and sustainability site assessments, generating assessment reports, creating educational materials, and educating current and potential clients about best practices in energy, sustainability, and applicable Energy Sense programs. This position is based in Champaign, Illinois, with potential for hybrid work.
Energy Sense is sponsored and funded by federal and state agencies including the Illinois State Energy Office at the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Opportunity, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources; the US Environmental Protection Agency; the US Department of Energy; local government agencies; and other funding sources. Energy Sense is a center at the University of Illinois System with a mission to empower organizations with practical solutions for climate, energy, and sustainability.
Energy Sense works to achieve its mission through a wide range of programs in energy efficiency, renewable energy development, greenhouse gas reduction, and clean energy workforce development.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Analysis
- Perform technical energy and sustainability analysis including but not limited to: facility energy benchmarking, identifying data patterns, exploring energy, resilience, and cost efficiency measures, estimating potential emissions reductions, renewable energy generation, and other resilience or sustainability-related calculations.
- Conduct site visits at project locations to support technical energy and sustainability analyses.
- Produce client-facing energy and sustainability reports detailing costs, savings potential, and funding sources for recommended projects.
- Research efficient technologies and sustainability practices in literature to produce educational materials and ensure accurate analysis methods.
- Promote awareness of Energy Sense energy and sustainability programs through participation in workshops, webinars, professional conferences, and other related events on a regional scale.
- Develop Energy Sense's client base through network interactions and direct client contact.
- Develop educational materials for presentations, workshops, publications, and digital media.
- Participate in planning and implementation of workshops, webinars and discussion groups.
- Track and report specific program activities.
- Follow-up with clients regarding project implementation.
- Other relevant duties as assigned to further the mission of Energy Sense.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Building Science, or related field.
- Experience conducting spreadsheet-based energy analysis, calculations, modeling, or related experience.
- Master's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Building Science, or closely related field.
- 2-5 years of professional experience in an engineering, architecture, building science, energy engineering research or a related field.
- Certified Energy Manager or similar energy certifications
- Valid driver's license upon reporting for work and ability to retain the license while in this position.
- Knowledge of or experience with performing energy assessments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to research and analyze information and data to make appropriate conclusions and recommendations.
- Ability to use software such as Microsoft Office Suite and web-based information management tools.
- Ability and willingness to travel in-state for site visits; carry and use site assessment tools and work safely around facility mechanical systems.
- Excellent organizational skills, such as time management, task prioritization, follow-through, and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work in teams
This is a Full Time academic professional position. The expected start date is 7/16/2026. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position.
The budgeted salary range for the position is $70,000.. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
