Overview

Under supervision, the Lead Sonographer oversees technical procedures, patient care and workflow in the sonography area to ensure safe and effective patient care. Performs sonography‐imaging procedures, which may include biopsy procedures. Responsible for initial and annual training and competencies.

Qualifications Education Level
  • Certificate of Completion, Radiologic Technology.
  • College Diploma, Related Field.
  • Associate’s Degree, Related Field.
Licenses/Certifications
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – Abdomen (RDMS‑AB) within 3 months of hire.
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – Obstetrics and Gynecology (RDMS‑OB/GYN) within 3 months.
  • Registered Vascular Technologist – Vascular Technology (RVT‑VT) within 3 months.
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – Pediatric Sonography (RDMS‑PS) within 3 months.
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – Breast (RDMS‑BR).
  • Registered in Sonography (S) within 3 months.
  • Registered in Breast Sonography (BS).
  • Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) within 3 months AND Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills Requirements
  • Competent to be taught or already performs ultrasound exams proficiently.
  • Basic knowledge of computers to access programs.
Responsibilities
  • Performs all essential functions of the Ultrasound Technologist/Sonographer.
  • Serves as a technical resource and subject‑matter expert for staff, management, and physicians in ultrasound imaging.
  • Oversees the patient schedule and workflow to maximum efficiency as established by department benchmarking, coordinating staff coverage during high exam volumes and minimizing staff during low volumes.
  • Performs or has input in staff scheduling and timecard edits based on department guidelines.
  • Participates in QA/QC programs and directs personnel in maintaining standards set out by accrediting bodies, licensures, and safety guidelines.
  • Participates in scheduling of department technical equipment service and/or maintenance.
  • Develops training programs and evaluates technical skills of staff, ensuring completion of new employee and annual employee competencies.
  • Recommends to the coordinator/manager/director personnel actions for hires, promotions, transfers, discharges, performance evaluations, and disciplinary measures of staff.
  • Participates in submitting information and imaging for accreditation following department guidelines, reporting timely updates to supervisors.
  • Aids in the annual review and periodic updates of department policies and protocols.
  • Performs on‑call duties and/or work variable shifts as assigned to meet department needs.
  • Performs coaching with staff, documents conversations, and records progressive discipline at the direction of supervisors.
