Accessible Media Technology Associate - Disability Resources & Educational Services

Job Summary

This position assists with creating and maintaining accessible media for students with disabilities attending the University of Illinois and registered with the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES).

Duties & Responsibilities

Training and Supervision

  • Develop and update online and in-person training for content creators and remediators on best practices in digital accessibility standards for media types used within an educational setting, and deliver consistent training as staff and standards evolve.
  • Maintain digital accessibility toolset and train AMS staff and student workers on the use and best practices as new tools are incorporated into the content remediation workflow.
  • Assist in the hiring and training of hourly staff to meet the workload capacity of the department.

Digital Accessibility Consulting & Remediation

  • Help test and remediate digital course content for students with disabilities, ensuring an accessible and intuitive user experience as well as communicating estimated delivery dates with clients.
  • Consult on matters related to assistive technology software, providing education, training, and basic troubleshooting to end users, as well as research new programs for potential adoption.
  • Ensure department web content is accurate and accessible in accordance with campus, state and federal policies.

Quality Assurance / Quality Control

  • Work with University professionals to ensure websites, PDFs, videos, and other digital content are within WCAG 2.1 standards, compliant with State and federal regulations such as the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility act (IITAA) or Title II of the ADA, as well as meet University of Illinois Digital Accessibility policies.
  • Contribute to the documentation and communication of service request progress tracking, accessibility tools, processes, and procedures.

Team Collaboration and Project Management

  • Participate and represent DRES in communities of practice (ITIL), workshops, conferences, events and other partnerships at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  • Work across a portfolio of websites, applications, and tools to create deliverables and track progress, and act as a conduit between DRES staff, course facilitators, students receiving DRES services, keeping stakeholders informed of project status and accomplishments.
  • Stay updated on accessibility laws and standards, and proactively apply this knowledge in design and development processes.
  • Contribute to campus technology initiatives and work groups that further the mission of the department.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of work experience in IT ‑ related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline may be substituted as follows:
    • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year
    • Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen (18) months
    • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years
    • Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years.
  • Demonstrated experience in accessibility testing, communications, web development, instructional design, user experience, and/or working with users to implement accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Business, Communications, English, Marketing, Journalism, Web Development, Instructional Design, Human Resource Development, Human Computer Interaction or a related field.
  • Experience in software testing processes and techniques.
  • Experience working in Agile development process.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience in mentoring, coaching, and training customers on solutions of accessibility issues, policies, procedures, and adherence to standards.
