Introduction

The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) invites applications for the Technology Specialist position to support the department. DIA has operated at the University of Illinois at Urbana‑Champaign since 1892 and supports 21 intercollegiate varsity sports competing in the Big Ten Conference and NCAA. DIA provides resources for over 500 student‑athletes and employs more than 300 staff members, supporting championship‑caliber opportunities in the classroom, competitive arena, and personal development.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Serve as a technology consultant and innovator for Illinois Athletics staff and coaches.
  • Provide end‑user support for desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, printers, and IoT devices.
  • Utilize the ticketing system to track and document work, create reports to identify trends, and deploy software, updates, and security patches.
  • Manage endpoint and group policies, printer deployment, workstation policy deployment, and new workstation setup.
  • Provision and deprovision hardware, create and maintain inventory records, and perform device imaging.
  • Manage user accounts and group memberships, provide user education, training, and documentation.
  • Staff onboarding/offboarding and schedule, train, and assist student workers.
  • Act as a technical and institutional resource for other Technology Specialists, providing training and advice.
Game Day and Special Events Support
  • Provide on‑site and on‑call support for athletics‑specific technology, including scoreboards, performance systems, digital signage, external media networking, instant replay, security camera systems, and stats scoreboard interfaces.
  • Schedule, train, and direct student workers, and create processes and documentation for continuity and standardization.
Organizational Relationship

This position reports to the Director, Sports Technology.

Job Summary

This position provides support for hardware, software, network, desktop computing and other related technology services within Illinois Athletics.

Impact in Your First Year
  • Within 3 months:
    Assist in keeping DIA employees operational from a technical standpoint.
  • Within 6 months:
    Learn to anticipate and assist in sports technology areas.
  • By the end of the first year:
    Make suggestions and contribute to sports technology efficiency and effectiveness and provide superior customer service.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of work experience in IT‑related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or a closely related field.
  • College coursework may be substituted: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year; 60 semester hours equals 18 months; 90 semester hours equals 2 years; 120 semester hours equals 3 years.
Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience within athletics.

Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and the ability to manage multiple workstations via endpoint management systems.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and tasks in time‑sensitive situations.
  • Maintain knowledge of NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and institution rules and regulations related to this position.
  • Championship mindset and professionalism, commitment to the Athletics Department and University mission, and flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and team travel.
Appointment and Benefits

This is a 100% full‑time Civil Service Technology Specialist position, appointed for 12 months, with an expected start date as soon as possible after 7/7/2026. Salary ranges from $55,000 to $60,000, commensurate with experience. The position is not eligible for work‑authorization sponsorship. Eligible for benefits, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, a retirement plan, paid time off, and tuition waivers for employees and dependents.
