Facilities & Services Job Summary
Under the administrative direction of the Director, Division of Safety & Compliance, manage development and implementation of campus occupational safety and health programs and/or manage the delivery occupational safety and health services.
Duties:- 40% - Perform risk assessments in research laboratories, academic laboratories, farms, industrial shops, construction sites, warehouses, dwellings, offices, and other campus locations for physical, chemical, ergonomic, psychological, and biological hazards to promote compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and campus policies, programs, and procedures. Report risk assessment findings and options for corrective actions to researchers, instructors, farm managers, shop managers, construction managers, facilities and operations managers, unit safety contacts, department heads, deans, and campus officers.
Provide ongoing support during corrective actions phase including re-evaluations, industrial hygiene monitoring, selection of appropriate control measures, liaison with appropriate vendors for product research, engineering design consultation and review, standard operating procedure development assistance and review, training, and other programmatic and service activities as necessary. - 15% - Supervise and/or direct others in the development of assigned programs and/or delivery of services and implementation support to campus units. Review subordinate work for accuracy, completeness, quality, and timeliness consistent with established departmental standards and provide feedback and coaching for continuous improvement. Create individual development plans, establish performance goals, and measure accomplishments of subordinates. Identify, plan, and coordinate work of contractors and consultants for performance of work associated with assigned programs and services.
- 15% - Manage day-to-day operations of the fire extinguisher program including managing work orders, assigning work to Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Technicians, taking inventory and ordering supplies and equipment, producing annual budget projections and replacement schedules, managing fire extinguisher maintenance vendor, ensuring monthly and annual inspections/maintenance are completed on-time, training new EHS Technicians, and ensuring the proper completion and maintenance of records.
- 10% - Plan, organize, develop and assist campus with field implementation of occupational safety and health programs and delivery of services. Continuously evaluate and modify Occupational Safety & Health policies, programs, procedures, and services based on customer feedback and program/service audits to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
- 5% - Assists in prompt communication of workplace incident/injury information to Illinois Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Reportable Injuries (fatality, amputation, in-patient hospitalization, and physical loss of eye) and investigations of such incidents. Assist in the coordination of departmental participation in near miss and incident investigations, review injury reports and data, conduct injury/illness trending, and make recommendations for corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
- 5% - Assist in prioritizing budgetary needs for occupational safety and health programs and services and provide oversight for program and service-related expenditures. Report on departmental, programmatic, and service metrics, accomplishments, gaps, areas for improvement, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Assist with the assessment and prioritization of needs for the Occupational Safety & Health Department.
- 5% - Any other duties as assigned including supporting the Purpose, Values and Guiding Principles of Facilities & Services; liaising with faculty, staff, students, and regulatory officials; assisting with the development of goals, vision, and strategic plans for Safety & Compliance and the Occupational Safety & Health Department; serving on campus safety committees; pursuing professional development activities; and operating a university vehicle to travel between work locations for duties such as responding promptly to emergencies, escorting regulators, performing assessments, supervising subordinate activities, or completing other safety services.
