The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for the position of Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) of Facilities & Services (F&S). This position leads a diverse workforce consisting of over 1,000 dedicated, experienced, and skilled professionals who plan, build, maintain, and serve the Illinois campus while exhibiting core values of trust, respect, accountability, integrity, teamwork, safety, and perseverance. The AVC of F&S leads a multi-faceted team to provide and maintain a physical environment that supports the learning, discovery, engagement, and economic development mission of the university. Reporting to the Senior Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, the AVC has overall responsibility for the unit’s budget, strategic direction, and all aspects of its operation. F&S is structured with ten divisions:
Building Maintenance & Grounds;
Human Resources, Culture & Strategy;
Planning & Design;
Project Delivery;
Safety & Compliance;
Shared Administrative Services;
Strategic Communications;
Strategic Initiatives & Sustainability;
Transportation & Building Services; and Utilities & Energy Services. With an annual budget of $212 million and oversight of construction projects currently valued at over $900 million, F&S is the largest administrative unit on campus. The Urbana-Champaign campus includes more than 22 million square feet across 643 university buildings and spans 6,370 acres.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to lead a highly professional staff and understand the unique role that F&S plays in a complex and diverse university environment. The AVC collaborates with university leadership in developing a long-term strategic view of the physical environment of campus, including the campus master plan and the utilities enterprise. Because the unit serves stakeholders across and beyond the university, it is essential that the successful candidate be a superior relationship builder who has personal resonance with the intellectual environment of a major research university, embodied in its faculty, staff, and students.

Additionally, they will be responsible for implementing workplace practices that support fair and consistent recruitment and retention, equitable access to contracting opportunities, and effective engagement with a broad range of community stakeholders. Likewise, the AVC is expected to take a leading role in the university’s efforts to realize its ambitious goal to steward environmental resources in a sustainable manner.

A master’s degree, preferably in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, planning, or business administration, is required. A minimum of 10 years of experience at a large, diversified, and complex college or university is required, along with experience in an executive leadership role in the facilities and services area. Prior experience directing a university master plan is preferred.
