Overview
Oral Maxillofacial Surgery serves a diverse patient population including trauma, head and neck cancer, cleft palate, biopsies, dental extractions, dental implants, pediatric and adult facial and jaw abnormalities. The procedural nurse performs assigned procedures and physical assessments, evaluates and revises the plan based on changes in patient status during procedural sedation, and administers moderate sedation in the presence of, and by the order of, a provider.
The nurse assesses patient health history, performs medication reconciliation, assesses compliance with the prescribed plan of care, and performs telephone triage to assess patient problems or concerns. The nurse also assesses learning needs, provides education for pre‑operative and post‑operative care, and obtains necessary imaging (2D and 3D) to facilitate the surgical plan.
- Certifications:
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 1 year – American Heart Association (AHA) - Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 1 year – American Heart Association (AHA)
- Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
Education:
College Diploma in Nursing (Required)

- Provide and facilitate competent health care for patients and families in the area of practice.
- Ensure adherence to established standards of care and scope of practice.
- Perform advanced nursing activities, including assisting with procedures using conscious sedation, placement of IVs, and administering chemotherapy drugs.
- Ensure documentation of care is complete and accurate.
- Provide health and wellness education to individuals and groups.
- Act as preceptor and support development of other staff and healthcare students.
- Provide leadership for initiatives designed to improve the quality of care or clinical outcomes.
- Assist Nursing Supervisor/coordinator in the development of departmental standing orders.
- Assess patient health history, perform medication reconciliation, and assess compliance with the prescribed plan of care.
- Perform telephone triage and assess patient problems or concerns by phone.
- Offer interventions, find resolutions, or seek assistance from providers as appropriate.
- Perform assigned procedures and conduct physical assessments to assess the patient.
- Evaluate and revise the plan based on changes in patient status.
- Administer moderate sedation in the presence of, and by the order of, a provider.
- Assess, interpret, and intervene based on patient assessment and vital signs.
- Document accurately and completely.
- Assess patient learning needs and perform education for pre‑operative and post‑operative care.
- Obtain necessary imaging, including 2D and 3D, to facilitate the ideal surgical plan.

The compensation range for this position is $33.11 per hour - $53.88 per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked, and compensation model.
