Position Highlights- Number of beds on unit: 41
- Patient population: NT4 is a 41‑bed unit specializing in the care of acute orthopaedic and urology surgical patients. We are DNV certified for hip and knee replacement surgeries. Surgical patients on this unit include limb trauma patients and low‑acuity medical patients. With Carle being a level trauma centre, most regional trauma patients will be admitted to this unit.
- Nurse to Patient ratio: 1:4‑6
- Department culture and resources: North Tower 4 is a fast‑paced throughput unit that collaborates with physical and occupational therapists. The average length of stay for most patients is a maximum of three days, so staff can experience the entire recovery process. We focus on a team‑based approach to provide the best and safest care. Resources include a full‑time educator, part‑time educator, two nurse supervisors, a manager, and charge nurses.
- Frequent nursing skills / equipment used: Wound Vacs, JP drains, Buck’s tractions, external fixators, lift equipment, orthotic devices (boots, slings, walker, etc.), chest tubes, Foley/IV/Mediport insertions, central line care and lab draws, nursing prioritisation, IV pumps, PCA pumps, feeding pumps, SCDs, telemetry monitoring, patient connection.
When the unit is full, the LPN will work with RNs with the highest acuity or be paired with an RN who has a heavy patient load. When the unit is not fully utilised, the LPN will assist the RN to manage the patient load. LPN tasks may include oral meds, IV piggy‑back meds, trach care, dressing changes, and documentation on assessments and care plans after the RN has completed the initial assessment and initiated the care plan.
QualificationsCertifications: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR);
Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA).
Education: College Diploma:
Licensed Practical Nurse (required).
Work Experience: Relevant nursing experience preferred.
Responsibilities- Pass all medications and hang IV piggy‑backs and fluids, excluding IV push meds.
- Chart assessments on assigned patients after the RN has charted the initial assessment.
- Chart care plans opened by the RN and assist with opening new care plans as needed.
- Communicate with physicians/APPs to receive orders and coordinate care.
- Complete dressing changes and trach care as required.
- Insert and care for NG tube and feedings through NG tube.
- Care for and change ostomy.
- Reinforce education and discharge instructions.
- Complete annual education as required for the DNV Hip and Knee Replacement Program.
The compensation range for this position is $25.73 per hour – $41.87 per hour. This range is a good‑faith minimum and maximum at the time of posting. Actual compensation will depend on qualifications, experience, location, training, licenses, shifts, and compensation model.
