Grounds Worker (Full-Time, Non-Exempt)

SUMMARY
Performs routine and extensive groundskeeping duties on all county buildings and properties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
* Cuts the lawn using hand, power, or riding mowers; trims and maintains edges around walks, flower beds, walls, shrubs, and trees; rakes and mulches leaves as needed.
* Plants grass, flowers, trees and shrubs; prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth.
* Sprays lawns, trees, and shrubs with fertilizer and insecticides.
* Maintains the upkeep of all county parking lots including signage, sealing, patching, and re-striping as needed.
* Cleans and maintains the upkeep on all equipment including trucks, tractors, mowers, edgers, tilers, sprayers, chain saws, etc.
* May perform minor repairs on all equipment utilized in the Grounds department.
* Responsible for the removal of snow for all County properties including parking lots, sidewalks, handicap ramps, stairways, etc.
* Responsible for applying ice melt and/or salt at all County properties including parking lots, sidewalks, handicap ramps, stairways, etc.
* May perform routine painting projects when groundskeeping work has been completed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job does not usually exercise supervisory responsibilities, however, may supervise part-time seasonal help.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCTATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
* High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one year of responsible experience in groundskeeping or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Should have knowledge of groundskeeping equipment and landscaping.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
* Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
* Ability to write simple correspondence.
* Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
* Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
* Ability compute rate, ratio, and percent.
* Interpret miscellaneous drawings and schematics.
REASONING ABILITY
* Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
* Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized solutions.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
* Valid Illinois Driver's License.

COMPENSATION
* Wage Range: $19.48 $ 27.51 per hour depending on qualifications.

* This is a full-time union position under the Agreement set by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Union Contract.
