Position: Assistant Lithic Analyst (Champaign IL)

Assistant Lithic Analyst

Illinois State Archaeological Survey, Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois – Champaign, IL

Position Summary

Conduct and complete lithic analyses and prepare reports at the Central Office in Champaign.

Employment

Academic Hourly (rate negotiable). Position may become permanent and benefits-eligible if funding becomes available.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under supervision of Lithic Analyst, participate in analysis of lithic materials from archaeological investigations.
  • Prepare reports for compliance submissions meeting professional and regulatory standards as well as for publication.
  • Carry out research goals and analysis parameters on projects.
  • Maintain electronic and handwritten lithic laboratory databases.
  • Assist in maintaining the Lithics Laboratory comparative collections and preparing lithic collections for curation.
  • Conduct database analysis via computer software and excel worksheets.
  • Assist in ISAS engagement activities for the general public, avocational societies and school groups and record private collections as appropriate.
Position Requirements and Qualifications
  • B.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field and 6 months experience in inventorying, identifying, and analyzing lithic assemblages.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Minimum of two-year field and laboratory experience on prehistoric sites in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area.
  • General familiarity with geological resources of northern mid-continent, classes of lithic materials, lithic research protocols, diagnostic lithic forms, tool production technology, and use wear traits.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete reports in a timely and competent manner in a team setting.
  • Must have basic familiarity with computer word processing, graphic, and database programs.
  • Requires a basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeological culture history.
