Visiting Scientific Specialist, Environmental Assessment Researcher Illinois State Geological Survey, Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign

The Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) is a premier state geological survey serving the needs of the public, government, and industry with earth science information and research relevant to natural resources, environmental quality, economic vitality, and public safety. ISGS is part of the Prairie Research Institute (PRI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.

ISGS is seeking a Visiting Scientific Specialist, Environmental Assessment Researcher to perform sponsored research on environmental assessments for Illinois Department of Transportation infrastructure projects. The role evaluates potential environmental and geologic hazards and risks to support safe, efficient, and cost‑effective project implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities Research – Data Analysis/Interpretation
  • Interpret, analyze, and summarize collected geological and environmental data related to potential hazards and risks.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports detailing findings, site history, and regulatory information.
  • Provide technical information to government agencies.
  • Participate in other geologic/environmental research initiatives.
Research – Field Work/Data Collection
  • Obtain, research, and analyze geological maps, regulatory files, site history, and environmental data.
  • Conduct statewide on‑site field research and interview representatives of industry, government agencies, and landowners.
  • Ensure safety of staff and equipment.
Outreach and Other
  • Participate in outreach and service events.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the discipline.
  • Perform other duties to further the mission and goals of the Survey, PRI, and University.
Minimum Qualifications – Required

Bachelor's degree in the geosciences or environmental sciences. Background with experience performing fieldwork. Ability to adhere to IDOT property assessment program health and safety plan, including required OSHA hazardous waste site worker training (40‑hour initial, 8‑hour annual refresher) and annual physical examinations. Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications – Preferred

Master's degree in the geosciences or environmental sciences. Alternate degree fields considered if experience is related to this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to interpret maps, collect and analyze data, evaluate hazards and risks, write technical reports, prioritize and organize workloads, use sound judgment, communicate effectively, collaborate, and use common software and databases.

Working Conditions

Fieldwork may involve adverse weather, insects, remoteness, security concerns, heavy traffic, and carrying equipment up to 25 pounds. Travel up to 30 % of the time, and overnight travel for up to one week.

Appointment Information

Full‑time visiting academic professional appointment. Potential transition to a regular position. Salary: $60,000. Not eligible for work‑authorization sponsorship.
