The Visiting Research Specialist in Life Sciences at the Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center (CBC) will complement its services on genome sequencing, gene expression and microbial profiling, and use of specialized laboratory equipment such as automated sample preparation equipment.

- Laboratory Support:
- Prepare RNA and DNA samples for gene expression protocols, whole genome and targeted sequencing, metagenomic profiling, single-cell processing, and nucleic acid quality assessment.
- Perform nucleic acid extraction and sequencing library construction across multiple NGS chemistries and platforms, including fragmentation, adapter ligation and indexing, amplification, size selection, pooling, and cleanup.
- Develop, optimize, and revise established laboratory protocols to support new applications, sample types, and chemistries as facility services expand.
- Program, operate, and maintain automated liquid handling systems for library preparation, sample normalization, and plate-based workflows.
- Set up and process research samples requiring DNA or RNA fragment analysis.
- Perform quality control of samples and libraries using Qubit, Nano Drop, Fragment Analyzer, and qPCR.
- Perform instrument loading, run setup, and quality control of sequencing runs.
- Assist with customer inquiries and applicable sample troubleshooting.
- Collaborate with other facility personnel on sample and library quality control and construction as needed.
- Adapt to upgrades and new instrumentation through timely study of new protocols and systems as they emerge.
- Administrative & Other Facility Support:
- Operate Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), entering complete data in a timely manner into high-throughput LIMS, Core LIMS, and other laboratory organizational folders.
- Carry out routine maintenance of laboratory equipment following training and, where applicable, instrument maintenance manuals; troubleshoot and arrange repair as needed; document all maintenance.
