Construction Laborer – University Housing

Perform physical labor on construction and maintenance work where some skill and experience are required. All University Housing staff foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Set up barricades, install signposts, demolish for renovation projects, lay and level asphalt, conduct asbestos abatement, drill holes in concrete, flag and manage traffic control, attend pre‑job meetings and recommend proper tools.
  • Assist in excavation work: hand‑digging ditches or trenches, back filling, breaking concrete or asphalt, compacting and leveling earth to grade specifications, shoring or bracing underground excavation; coordinate material delivery and debris cleanup.
  • Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate hazards and record openings and distances for layout.
  • Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures.
  • Assist in repair and replacement of sewer lines; rods, brushes, flushes lateral and side sewer lines; clean out window wells and exterior drains of debris.
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement and adjustment of machinery, equipment and materials.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands

Frequent physical activity including moving equipment, navigating vertical spaces, moving across varied surfaces, reaching and retrieving items at lower heights, and handling materials and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience using tools and equipment commonly used by laborers in construction, including knowledge of asbestos removal and handling.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Basic arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and tools for construction or repair of buildings or other structures.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of erecting scaffolding and rigging supports.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full‑time Civil Service 2210 – Construction Laborer position, appointed on a 12‑month basis. The position will begin as soon as possible after the close of the search.

Wage: $35.51 per hour. Final salary will be determined by assessment of market data, internal equity, qualifications, collective bargaining agreements and budget constraints.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The position will be performed on the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign campus per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy.
