Construction Laborer – University Housing

University Housing provides a vital part of the Illinois experience, maintaining safe, healthy, and welcoming homes for residents across 26 residence halls, three apartment complexes, nine dining locations, and various campus facilities.

Job Summary

Perform physical labor on construction and maintenance work. Some skill and experience are required. All staff foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Set up barricades, install signposts, demolish for renovation projects, lay and level asphalt, perform asbestos abatement, drill holes in concrete, flag and manage traffic control, attend pre‑job meetings and recommend proper tools for work efficiency.
  • Assist in excavation work by hand‑digging ditches or trenches, back filling excavations, breaking out concrete or asphalt, compacting and leveling earth, and shoring/bracing underground excavation. Coordinate with other crafts for delivery of materials and cleaning of debris.
  • Cleans and prepares construction sites to eliminate possible hazards, and records openings and distances.
  • Erects and disassembles scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures.
  • Assists in repair and replacement of sewer lines, rods/brushes and flushes lateral and side sewer lines, cleans out and clears window wells and exterior drains of leaves and debris.
  • Signals equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Additional Physical Demands

Position involves frequent physical activity, including moving equipment, navigating vertical spaces, moving on varied surfaces, reaching and retrieving items at lower heights, and handling materials and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in the use of tools and equipment commonly used by laborers in the construction trade, including knowledge of asbestos removal/handling.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction or repair of buildings or other structures.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of erecting scaffolding and rigging supports.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full‑time Civil Service 2210 – Construction Laborer position, appointed on a 12‑month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary: $35.51 per hour. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available.

Work schedule:

M‑F, 8 AM–4:30 PM on the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign campus.
