Job Summary:

To perform skilled mechanical work on automotive vehicles, grounds maintenance equipment, construction-type equipment, and other various types of equipment used by the various sections and departments within the University.

• Change oil and filters on cars, trucks, and other equipment as assigned.
• Wash and grease cars, trucks and other equipment as assigned; ensure vehicles are picked up from and returned to their assigned parking spaces across campus.
• Check/replaces batteries, tires, water, oil, gasoline, and windshield washer reservoir; also change, rotate and repair tires.
• Make minor repairs and adjustments as needed to the electrical system, wheel bearing adjustment, wheel balance, etc.
• Dispense fuel at the Garage and operate the fuel truck to dispense fuel at locations across campus.
• In the absence of dispatch personnel, dispatch vehicles to Car Pool patrons.
• Perform service calls on disabled vehicles and return them to the Garage for repairs if needed.
• Clean and repair tools and equipment as needed.
• Assist with mechanical and body repair work as necessary.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Seasonal weather extremes are faced on occasion. Exposure to sun, wind, cold, heat, dampness, snow and ice can be expected. Carbon monoxide from running engines is present in the shop area. Ability to work around various chemicals and navigate vertical spaces, including ladders, stairs and various pieces of equipment, is required.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicle(s) to be operated by the incumbent.

• Working knowledge of Campus Garage preventive maintenance procedures.
• Knowledge of carpool dispatch procedures.
• Maintain a clean garage work area.
• Receive verbal and written instructions, performing work with minimum supervision.
• Capable of making repairs on a large variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Know and follow guidelines for Spill Prevention, Control, and cleanup, and handling of biohazards and hazardous chemicals.

The Automotive Technician Assistant is a 100% full‑time Civil Service position, appointed on a 12‑month basis. The hourly rate of pay for this position is $21.42 and the work schedule is a rotating schedule: schedules rotate every 3 months.

Monday–Friday Rotation: 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm (Off Saturday and Sunday).

Weekend Rotation: 6:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, with Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm (Off Thursday and Friday).
