Mechanic, Trades ​/ Skilled Labor

General Summary of Position:

Performs, under general supervision, a variety of skilled maintenance duties related to the repair, overhaul, upkeep and maintenance of District equipment and facilities. Specializes in electrical maintenance / electronics, but is expected to have a basic level of knowledge in mechanics. Will assist in any maintenance or operation area as needed.

1. Performs skilled maintenance duties in electrical / electronics based upon training and experience. Uses data acquired from all available sources (e.g. electronic control and monitoring system) to determine the best course of action. Specific examples of duties include:

General

• Maintains and repairs wastewater treatment plant equipment such as pumps, compressors, engines, piping, valves, motors, motor controls, sensors, alarms, telemetry systems, lighting, metering devices, vehicles and generators according to established safety and procedural guidelines
• Performs complex and routine preventive inspections
• Fabricates and/or installs equipment
• Interprets illustrated part breakdowns, blueprints, and sketches
• Calibrates instruments

Electrical / Electronic

• Calibrates instruments
• Troubleshoots portable AC generator voltage control circuits and automatic transfer switches
• Diagnoses and evaluates circuit boards to determine if replacement is warranted
• Troubleshoots or assists with maintenance and repair of motor control circuits and AC/DC electronic drives
• Programs PLCs with ladder logic.
• Troubleshoots HVAC ventilation and airflow to determine cause and the need for a certified contractor to perform repair or maintenance

Mechanical

• Performs basic troubleshooting of pumping systems to determine the root of the problem and affect needed repairs.
• Fabricates and cuts various metals using welding procedures
• Performs intermediate troubleshooting and maintenance of hydraulic and compressed air systems

2. Performs routine and complex equipment overhauls according to budget, and time and material standards established for the job. Utilizes data from all sources to recommend changes to the schedule for equipment overhauls.

3. May assist on projects related to new equipment installation, major overhauls, or other projects as assigned.

4. May serve as mentor and/or trainer for co-workers as assigned. May assist in writing, reviewing, and revising procedures.

5. Operates heavy equipment such as tractors, end loaders, cranes, compressors, generators, fork lift trucks, tandem dump trucks, etc. according to established practices in order to complete assigned tasks.

6. Completes required paperwork and data input requirements for time and material reports and parts requisitions according to established guidelines. Updates procedures and documentation related to equipment operations and repair.

7. Effectively communicates and works as a team member with other employees in order to acquire information on the symptoms of equipment performance, and uses this information to affect repairs that reduce equipment downtime and repeat repairs.

8. Completes specific job competencies for continued employment including participation in required training and educational programs. Demonstrates mastery of job knowledge, integrates learning by demonstrating ability to anticipate problems, recommend possible solutions including procedural or process changes, and gaining competency in the operation of new systems, equipment and processes.

9. Responds to call-ins as needed.

10. Shares knowledge and experience with co-workers and manager.

11. Performs additional duties as requested.

1. Work requires ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level normally acquired through post high school training plus a minimum of 1 year of electrical / or electronic maintenance experience or equivalent education.

2. Work requires standard knowledge and experience in the standard practices, methods, materials and tools used in one or more of the electrical, electronic, construction or mechanical trades.

3. Work requires ability to learn and retain instructions for operating, repairing and maintaining equipment and tools. Must be able to read and understand electronic and electrical diagrams and schematics and have a basic understanding of mechanical diagrams.
