About the Job

Under general supervision, the Part‑Time Bus Operator operates district vehicles, transports passengers in a safe, courteous, and timely manner, and communicates with and assists passengers as required. This position reports to the Operations Director, Operations Supervisors, or designee.

Training: 40 hours per week Monday‑Friday 6:00AM–2:30PM for the first 4‑5 weeks. For the next 3‑4 weeks training continues 40 hours per week, with times fluctuating based on availability. After training you may transition to part‑time flexible hours. Part‑time Operators work a minimum of 20 flexible hours per week with opportunity for additional hours. Training rate: $19.54 per hour.

Essential Functions
  • Operate all models of buses, vans, and other district vehicles as assigned, transporting passengers safely and courteously, and transporting district vehicles between locations as required.
  • Provide assistance to all passengers, answering questions and providing information to allow for a safe and satisfying experience.
  • Operate passenger lift and kneeler equipment to provide access to and from district buses and vans.
  • Operate electronic and computerized radio, electronic destination signs, doors, lifts, camera security systems, and other equipment installed on district vehicles.
  • Communicate with Control to provide information on fares, transfers, routes, and other policies and rules concerning conduct, service, safety, and policy changes.
  • Assist individuals with physical and/or mental limitations to provide access to public transportation and ensure passenger safety.
  • Provide service on normal route schedules for school children from middle school to high school age in a safe and courteous manner.
  • Provide written and verbal reports to document incidents, including accident reports, incident reports, and vehicle defect reports.
  • Monitor the fare box, transfers, and passes to ensure accurate fare amounts for seniors, adults, youth, and persons with disabilities.
  • Inspect MTD vehicles to ensure safe access when boarding and exiting, as required by law, and report malfunctions and other needed repairs promptly.
  • Observe and respond to emergency situations involving passengers, the public, or MTD vehicles to maintain public/passenger safety and proper bus operation.

Demands
  • The exertion level required for this position is considered medium work.
  • Ability to sit without discomfort for prolonged periods of time on a variety of driver’s seats in different model vehicles.
  • Fit safely behind the steering wheel in such a manner that a safe clearance exists between the abdomen and the steering wheel.
  • Fit in the driver’s seat to safely operate the accelerator, brake pedals, and floor signal switches.
  • Constant and repetitive use of hands, arms, and fingers to grasp and push steering wheel and controls.
  • Turn head up to 180 degrees in either direction on a regular and frequent basis.
  • Walk and climb/descend steps to enter and exit a district vehicle.
  • Operate the various securement mechanisms to secure a wheelchair on a district vehicle.
  • Occasionally crouch, kneel, and bend to complete pre‑ and post‑trip checks and to assist customers.
  • Position requires ability to talk and hear; use vision to read printed materials, signs, and monitor traffic, and dexterity to use equipment properly.
