Job Description

Central Utah Forestry Fire & State Lands and Sanpete County are seeking a reliable and motivated individual with leadership experience on a wildland engine for an Engine Crew Supervisor position. This is a benefited time limited position. This position will be supervised by the Sanpete County Warden and will occasionally share in workload responsibilities with the Assistant Warden. The Engine Crew Supervisor will manage and supervise a Type 3/4 Engine that provides suppression response within the RIFC Dispatch area and Sanpete County.

The Engine Will support off district assignments when local conditions allow. When not on assignment or responding to local initial attack in the Area, the incumbant will work closely with the Area's Fuels Crew managed under the WUI Program Manager on fuels mitigation projects. The incumbent will be in charge of scheduling staffing needs; training crew members; tracking and maintaining equipment inventory;

drive, operate, and preform preventative maintenance on the engine; supervising crew members on fuels mitigation projects and wildfire assignments; assisting with administrative work such as time-sheets, purchasing, project and fire billing, injury reports, and personnel evaluations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise subordinate personnel including: determining workload and delegating assignments, training, evaluating performance, initiating corrective or disciplinary actions. Mentor, motivate and provide direction for subordinates, develop and deliver curriculum for training.
  • Create and develop strategies and plans, organize workplace functions; coordinate times, vacation schedules, and other staffing coverage; uphold established workplace procedures; authorize and audit unit billing/expenditures; maintain records; arrange for equipment maintenance and is responsible for its upkeep and accountability.
    Identify and mitigate hazardous situations to ensure the safety of personnel, adjoining resources and/ or the public.
  • Provide leaders intent and direction for all wildland firefighting and project applications. Ensure all operations meet agency guidelines for safe operations.
  • Provide saw work; chipping; RX burning and other fuels mitigation work within the Central Area.
  • Complete annual core training and certification requirements for qualifications, competency and physical fitness per the standards of the state of Utah, Forestry Fire & State Lands.
Qualifications Minimums
  • Qualified Engine Boss (ENGB)
  • Qualified Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5).
  • Abilityto obtain class B Commercial Driver License with a Tanker Endorsement.
  • Ability to pass the Arduous Work Capacity Test.
  • Qualified Faller 3.
Preferences
  • Qualified Faller 2.
  • Qualified Type 4 Incident Commander.
Supplemental Information
  • Duties include demands for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions, over extended periods of time. Candidates must be able to adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust and smoke, poor bivouac, and eating situations under unpredictable circumstances.
  • Fire and land management projects may require camping out and preparing their own food.
  • Must maintain on-call availability, travel extensively, and endure primitive camping conditions.
