Key Responsibilities Behavioral Support:
Implementing specific Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). This includes using de-escalation techniques, providing "cool-down" breaks, and reinforcing positive choices.
Academic Adaptation:
Modifying general education lessons so they meet the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. You aren't just teaching math; you're teaching math in a way that fits their specific brain.
Social

Acting as a bridge during lunch, recess, or elective classes. You help the student navigate social cues and encourage meaningful interactions with their peers.
Data Collection:
Keeping detailed records of a student's progress. This might include tracking how many times a student stays on task or recording their success with a specific fine motor skill.
Daily Living
Skills:
Assisting with "functional" life skills, which can range from organizing a backpack and navigating a hallway to personal hygiene support, depending on the student's needs. It's a job that requires high emotional intelligence and immense patience. You are often the person who understands the student's "unspoken" language—recognizing a melt‑down before it happens and knowing exactly which sensory tool or phrase will help them feel safe.
