Under the general supervision of the special education teacher, the special education teacher assistant supports the implementation of student IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) by assisting the teacher in five areas of service: instructional support, management and supervision support, personal support, assessment support and material management.

Job Description

Applications must be submitted no later than Monday, June 1, 2026. The position is a Special Education Assistant (ASC Unit) and requires 5.9 hours per day, 174 days per year, with a salary grade of 7 ($20.98 per hour, Support Salary Table 2026‑2027). Promotions result in a minimum 5% increase. The assistant may be required to lift, feed, communicate via simple signs or signals, and perform medical procedures including gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, and diapering of adult‑size students.

The assistant supports the implementation of student IEPs by assisting the teacher in the following five areas of service:

Instructional support
Management and supervision support
Personal support
Assessment support
Material management

Qualifications / Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent education and/or experience.

District in‑service training (required after hiring).

Basic knowledge of academic subjects.

Substitution or equivalent experience preferred.

Specific skills required of the assistant depend upon the assignment, the student’s needs and IEP, and upon the established procedures of the supervising professional.

The equivalent of two years (48 semester hours) full‑time education at an institution of higher education; or an associate’s degree; or the ability to pass a Utah State Office of Education approved Para‑Professional Test will be required in the future.
