1/2 Contract Secondary Special Education Educator beginning in August for the school year. Provides students with learning, cognitive, or physical disabilities with individually tailored support, counsel, and learning experiences to progress toward educational goals. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individual Education Programs (IEP).
Responsibilities- Determine specific learning problems, skill deficiencies, or social adjustment difficulties of students and initiate remediation programs in these areas.
- Evaluate each student in terms of initial needs and progress toward remediation.
- Develop and present appropriate IEP goals.
- Prepare progress reports and year-end evaluations, administering pre-tests and post-tests as appropriate and necessary.
- Make available a wide range of teaching materials and equipment, including reading material at many levels, instructional games, and resource materials.
- Counsel students in identifying and dealing with their academic and social challenges.
- Provide opportunities for students to explore life and career goals.
- Provide students with tutoring for other classes.
- Establish and maintain standards of individual student behavior, working closely with other teachers to help students maintain satisfactory class work, homework, and behavior.
- Help parents understand the specific challenges of educationally handicapped students and the goals and operation of the program, apprising them of challenges and progress.
- Participate in the selection and evaluation of students for admission to the program of education for such students.
- Participate in case conferences about students who learn differently.
- Perform basic attendance accounting and similar record‑keeping functions pertinent to the special education program.
- Keep abreast of new developments in the field by reading journals and publications, attending professional society meetings and seminars, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
- Evaluate special education needs to ensure that objectives for student education are met.
- Understand and interpret laws, rules, and regulations for students, parents, and paraprofessionals.
- Prepare reports for federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
- Administer achievement tests to measure student level of performance.
- Write and maintain IEP files and monitor compliance.
- Help students with daily living skills such as toileting and social interaction.
- Work with students and their behavior needs.
