Position Summary: The Special Education Para educator (Secretary) assists assigned teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of special education students; performs clerical tasks for the Special Education department; and assists students by meeting personal care and special health care needs, in addition to developing their academic, daily living, and behavioral skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Communicates with parents for scheduling meetings and taking messages for special education teachers.
- Assists in maintaining students' files/records for documenting activities and providing reliable information.
- Monitors individual students in classrooms, school and community settings for a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g., scheduling, copying) to support teachers and administrators.
- Adapts to changing work priorities, displays tact and courtesy, meets deadlines and schedules, sets priorities, pays attention to detail, and works with detailed information/data.
- Adapts classroom work under teacher direction to support and reinforce lesson plans.
- Supports students in various settings—special education classroom, general education classroom, one-on-one, etc.
- Provides accommodations such as reading tests aloud, scribe, alternate assessment locations, check‑in/check‑out support.
- Supports the classroom teacher in collecting data.
- Assists other personnel as needed for supporting completion of their work activities.
- Implements instructional behavioral programs under teacher supervision to improve students' academic success.
- Assists with daily living skills (e.g., toileting, changing diapers, feeding, personal hygiene) as needed.
- Complies with duties assigned by building administrator or special education department for the benefit of students.
- Maintains regular attendance at work.
- Provides substitute teaching in special education classrooms as required.
- Attendance is an essential function: Physical presence at the worksite is essential for collaboration, direct interaction, and access to on‑site resources.
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the completion of their work activities.
- Basic
Physical Requirements:- Maintain a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, bending, standing, sitting) for extended periods.
- Manage physically or verbally aggressive students safely.
- Lift occasionally up to 60 lbs. to a height of 36 inches; frequently up to 25 lbs. to a height of 36 inches.
- Get in and out of full-size 8‑passenger vans.
- Sanitize and clean equipment.
- Remain calm and follow safety procedures in emergencies.
- Walk with students to bus stops in inclement weather and train students to use public transportation.
- Participate in MANDT training.
- May work with biohazards (blood‑borne pathogens, human waste, cleaning/disinfecting materials).
- Experience and
Education:- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: 2 years of college or a bachelor’s degree.
- Previous job‑related experience preferred.
