Location: Morgan

Job Summary

Manages the medical and safety aspects for the members, member guests and employees of Wasatch Peaks Ranch in a constantly changing mountain environment. This includes avalanche risk reduction, hands‑on patient care, transportation, intensive customer service and interdepartmental cooperation. This position requires working outside in a variety of weather conditions and a high level of fitness.

Responsibilities
  • Administer first aid and transportation in the event of a medical emergency.
  • Operate snowmobiles safely for operational and patient transport needs.
  • Perform all aspects of lift evacuation, including tower climbing, ground belay, line riding, and other unique scenarios.
  • Perform technical rope rescue using high‑angle rescue, sled belay, and other equipment.
  • Operate as a mountain dispatcher and, when needed, as a central dispatcher during avalanche risk‑reduction work.
  • Document incidents, snow‑safety efforts, and accident investigations.
  • Use Smart Mtn and GIS‑based software for avalanche risk‑reduction documentation and daily record‑keeping.
  • Provide industry‑leading customer service to members and guests, including mountain information, evacuation from difficult situations, finding lost equipment, and safety education.
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of mountain weather and forecasting, including computer weather models.
  • Assist the snow‑safety team with snow stability evaluations and terrain recommendations.
  • Perform avalanche risk‑reduction work as directed by the snow‑safety team.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all facets of avalanche rescue, both in‑bounds and out‑of‑bounds.
  • Maintain rope lines, signage, pads, fencing, and other hazard markers.
  • Perform daily opening and closing procedures.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on equipment as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with guests and team members.
  • Exhibit strong leadership and decision‑making skills.
  • Work well with others.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Patroller Levels Level I Patroller – Beginner
  • Meet the requirements of Basic Patroller.
  • Minimum 3 years ski patrol experience at Wasatch Peaks Ranch or equivalent.
Level II Patroller – Intermediate
  • Meet the requirements of Basic Patroller.
  • Minimum 7 years ski patrol experience at Wasatch Peaks Ranch or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate ability to evacuate all lifts using a variety of techniques for different scenarios.
  • Demonstrate advanced understanding of avalanche paths and risk‑reduction strategies.
  • Lead risk‑reduction teams through multiple routes.
  • Operate as an AvSAR site commander during an avalanche rescue.
  • Manage a multi‑patient medical incident, including triage.
  • Additional responsibilities same as in Responsibilities.
Level III Patroller – Advanced
  • Meet the requirements of Intermediate Patroller.
  • Minimum 7 years ski patrol experience at Wasatch Peaks Ranch or equivalent.
  • Demonstrate advanced ability to evacuate all lifts, including downhill chairs and z‑drags.
  • Deep knowledge of out‑of‑bounds avalanche terrain and rescue implications.
  • Operate as an AvSAR site commander during an avalanche rescue.
  • Perform additional responsibilities same as in Responsibilities.
License or Safety Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain an ATF explosives handler permit.
  • Current CPR and medical certification at the EMT, OEC, or WFR level (must certify at OEC level or higher by start of season).
Educational Requirements
  • High school diploma.
Physical Requirements
  • Safely ski all terrain at an expert level.
  • Hike and ski in steep, exposed terrain in arduous conditions with packs weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • Read and write in English.
  • Communicate verbally and effectively using two‑way radios.
  • Give and/or follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Understand ski resort operations.
  • Supervise subordinates.
  • Visually inspect all work areas.
  • Operate equipment for several hours at a time.
  • Perform basic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Retrieve, read, and interpret information from technical sources.
  • Stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, twist, turn, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Lift up to 75 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, and 10 lbs constantly.
