Description

The Surgical Environmental Services Technician is responsible for performing specialized cleaning, disinfection, and preparation of all perioperative areas, including operating rooms, pre/post‑operative suites, and sterile core areas. This role also manages the organized distribution and storage of surgical linens and essential supplies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform terminal and procedure cleaning according to AORN and CSTS guidelines.
  • Clean surgical tables, equipment, lights, scrub sinks, walls, and floors before and after procedures.
  • Safely handle and dispose of general trash, regulated medical waste, and bio‑hazardous materials.
  • Conduct monthly cleaning of surgical department areas such as hallways, locker rooms, storage rooms, and staff lounges.
  • Manage linen operations: sort, transport, stock blankets, and organize clean scrubs and gowns.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and PPE.
  • Report maintenance issues, equipment malfunctions, and safety hazards immediately.
  • Use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely and in compliance with safety and occupational health standards.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Previous cleaning, janitorial, or housekeeping experience; experience in a healthcare or sterile environment preferred.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions precisely.
  • Strong time‑management skills to handle quick turnovers between cases.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, lift up to 50 lbs, push, and pull equipment for the duration of the shift.
  • Tolerance for frequent exposure to cleaning chemicals and bio‑hazardous materials (with appropriate PPE).
  • On‑the‑job training in surgical cleaning, infection control, and proper chemical use will be provided.
  • CSTS Certified – Required. CSTS Class and Certification test will be completed at BMH during the training period.
