The Machine Shop / Maintenance Manager provides daily leadership and direction to production employees, with primary responsibility for achieving company objectives in Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery, 5S, and Employee Engagement. This position oversees manufacturing operations within the machine shop and maintenance departments, including the production of tooling and other machined components, equipment maintenance/repairs and facility maintenance.
The ideal candidate possesses strong technical expertise across all aspects of machining and manufacturing, combined with demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, continuous-improvement, and financial-management capabilities. This individual will develop and implement manufacturing standards, procedures, and processes; optimize the utilization of people, equipment, materials, and tooling; and motivate employees to achieve high levels of productivity and performance.
The position also serves as a key member of the Research & Development (R&D) team
, contributing manufacturing expertise to the design, development, and launch of new and improved products.
- Establish and execute strategic objectives that align departmental activities with overall company goals and business objectives.
- Provide daily leadership, direction, coaching, and performance management for employees.
- Build a culture of accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and development to employees.
- Oversee the manufacture of tooling, machined components, and other production requirements within the machine shop.
- Oversee maintenance, rebuilds and repairs for all operations and facility needs
- Ensure departmental efficiency, productivity, quality, and schedule-performance targets are consistently met or exceeded.
- Lead continuous-improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, process reliability, manufacturing cost, delivery performance, and waste reduction.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, eliminate non-value-added activities, reduce downtime, and increase throughput.
- Conduct daily Layered Process Audits (LPAs) and weekly GEMBA walks/audits.
- Establish and maintain effective KPI’s and conduct daily department meetings focused on Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery, 5S, and Employee Engagement.
- Ensure production activities conform to established specifications, procedures, quality requirements, and customer expectations.
- Prepare CAPEX requests, including financial analysis, return-on-investment (ROI) justification, and supporting business cases.
- Monitor departmental spending and ensure resources are utilized efficiently and responsibly.
- Provide leadership in the selection, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of production equipment.
- Lead the Maintenance team in developing, implementing, and maintaining effective Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and preventive-maintenance programs.
- Review equipment maintenance records and logs to identify recurring issues, reliability concerns, and opportunities for improvement.
- Support efforts to minimize equipment downtime and maximize machine availability and operational reliability.
- Maintain a strong safety culture and ensure all employees understand and consistently follow company safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe shop environment at all times.
- Participate as a key member of the R&D team in the development of new and improved products.
- Provide manufacturing and machining expertise during product design and development.
- Evaluate new product designs for manufacturability, tooling requirements, process capability, cost, and production efficiency.
