Position: Lead Wildland Firefighter (Engine Captain) - Direct Hire Authority
Location: Duchesne

This Lead Wildland Firefighter, GW-0456-8 position serves as Engine Captain with the U.S. Wildland Fire Service. The role is located in Fort Duchesne, Utah and is filled under Direct‑Hire Authority. Veterans preference is not applicable.

Major Duties
  • Serves as an Engine Captain and oversees operation of a fire engine module.
  • Leads three or more regularly assigned firefighters, applying an understanding of firefighter safety, fire behavior, weather, fuels, and training in fire management.
  • Drives and operates a wildland fire engine, positioning it for proper use, coordinating module or crew logistics, and placing caches of equipment and supplies at strategic points.
  • Operates, moves, inspects, and performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment including crew carriers, fire engines, command vehicles, pickups, and other specialized equipment.
  • Ensures adequate supply of water and chemical agents are maintained at the fire, especially on critical areas of the fireline; locates water sources and checks for volume and cleanliness for engine resupply.
  • Performs engine operations techniques, including tandem operations, mobile attack, pump and roll, firing and holding operations, stationary attack, engine protection, simple, and progressive hose lays.
  • Ensures pump tests and daily engine preventative maintenance equipment checks are completed; keeps the engine in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch.
  • Ensures assigned crew members or daily work assignments are in a state of readiness for the assignment or initial attack.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Suitability for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
  • Direct deposit required.
  • Must submit to a drug test and receive a negative result prior to appointment; position is subject to random drug testing.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment medical examination and may be subject to post‑employment examinations to maintain fitness standards.
  • Must pass the work capacity test for arduous positions.
  • Must operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of official duties and hold and maintain a valid state driver’s license throughout employment.
  • Official U.S. Wildland Fire Service uniform required.
  • Will serve a 1‑year probationary period during which fitness and continued employment will be evaluated.
  • Individuals assigned male at birth after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older for hazardous positions and meet the maximum age requirement.
  • May be expected to travel in a small single‑engine aircraft (not pilot).
  • May be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Indian Preference Policy applies to qualified Indian candidates; verification form BIA‑4432 must be submitted if claiming Indian preference.
