A growing defense manufacturer is seeking an experienced Senior CNC Programmer to develop and optimize machining processes for advanced transmission components used in tracked military vehicles.
This hands-on role will program and support 3-, 4-, and 5-axis machining centers and mill-turn equipment. The Senior CNC Programmer will work closely with the shop floor to improve cycle times, tool life, quality, and equipment performance while reducing downtime and manual intervention.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, implement, and optimize CNC programs using Siemens NX, Mastercam, or similar CAD/CAM software
- Program and set up 3-, 4-, and 5-axis machining centers and mill-turn equipment
- Develop machining processes for transmission housings, covers, piston housings, gears, and splines
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, technical specifications, and process documentation
- Select cutting tools and develop effective tooling strategies
- Implement and optimize probing techniques and cutting-tool setups
- Troubleshoot programming, machining, tooling, and quality issues directly on the shop floor
- Improve cycle times, tool life, machine utilization, and overall equipment effectiveness
- Apply lean manufacturing principles to reduce waste and process variation
- Monitor cutting-tool performance and coordinate with tooling suppliers
- Support the commissioning and launch of new CNC machines
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams
Qualifications
- At least 5–7 years of hands-on CNC machining experience with milling and turning operations
- At least 5–7 years of CNC programming experience
- Proficiency with Siemens NX, Mastercam, or comparable CAD/CAM software
- Strong knowledge of 3-, 4-, and 5-axis machining and mill-turn equipment
- Proficiency in G-code programming, CNC setup, and machine operation
- Ability to interpret blueprints, GD&T, and technical specifications
- Experience commissioning new CNC machines
- Experience with Siemens Teamcenter or another PLM system
- Proficiency with micrometers, bore gauges, depth gauges, and other precision measurement tools
- Knowledge of machining aluminum, mild steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Renishaw probe-programming experience
- Experience machining gears, splines, transmission housings, or other complex components
