Overview

To improve the health knowledge, attitudes and medical practices of North Slope rural village communities by promoting, supporting, and assisting in delivering a total health care program and providing follow‑up and continued contact with the health care delivery system at the community level.

The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. They provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position‑specific duties.

Responsibilities
  • Perform clerical duties in accordance with Department procedures and Borough policy.
  • Answer incoming telephone and radio calls, direct callers or take and relay messages.
  • Coordinate and schedule meetings and appointments as requested.
  • Greet and assist visitors; provide information and assist with applications, government forms and other documents.
  • Prepare and process reports, documents and forms; review documents and data for compliance and accuracy; process documents and maintain department document logs as required.
  • Compile and update statistical information, reports and related documents; attend meetings, take and transcribe meeting minutes.
  • Oversee day‑to‑day office activities; train and coordinate clerical staff; monitor document preparation for accuracy and completion; supervise office supplies inventory.
  • Prepare timesheets for employees and keep daily attendance records.
  • Maintain and update departmental files and records; prepare documents for filing.
  • Follow emergency procedures as outlined in North Slope Borough and program policies.
  • Protect self, co‑workers and consumers by following policies to prevent the spread of blood‑borne and/or airborne diseases.
  • Update and track a variety of electronic and paper files, records, reports, ensuring file integrity and confidentiality by monitoring compliance with Department policies.
  • Enter information into computer tracking systems; schedule, prepare and proofread documents for distribution; comply with document requirements for patient travel and appointments.
  • Develop and maintain patient list for needs assessment and coordinate with providers.
  • Provide patient follow‑up for referrals from medical clinic and public health staff as needed.
  • Utilize Electronic Health Records (EHR) and RPMS systems, or other electronic databases for patient, chart reviews, and referrals as needed.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co‑workers at all levels.
  • Represent organization professionally, building respect and confidence in the community.
  • Assist Health Staff in meeting Indian Health Service (IHS) standards of care for all clientele.
  • Take vital signs including blood pressure, pulse and respiration; assist with patient care such as screening patients through triage.
  • Preform Home Visits; provide and assist with home visits as needed for patient advocacy, continuity of care, community outreach, wellness checks for elders and others in the community.
  • Act as liaison between patients, agencies, programs, and departments for the clinic.
  • Conduct well‑child checks in the village health clinics.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work‑related issues, personnel records and Borough information; respect client rights including all HIPAA laws and requirements.
  • Be willing to work a non‑traditional schedule including evenings, holidays, weekends, and may be subject to 24‑hour on‑call status.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate or G.E.D. or a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
  • Two (2) years minimum experience in the medical field setting.
  • One (1) year minimum administrative experience.
  • Knowledge of Borough policies and procedures and records management rules and guidelines.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and a variety of software applications.
  • Effective oral, written, and reading communication skills.
